DEL MAR, Calif. – The best older horse in the nation and the best 3-year-old in California both turned in sharp drills early Saturday morning at Del Mar to kick off a busy morning of workouts on a warm, humid morning. The unbeaten Flightline has been the star of these Saturday sessions all summer, and he continued to impress with another brilliant drill as he moves closer to his next start, the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic here Sept. 3. And only moments after he worked, Taiba, the Santa Anita Derby winner and most recently second in the Haskell, worked in company as he prepares for his next likely start, next month’s Pennsylvania Derby. Flightline was the first horse to work after the 6:30 a.m. renovation break. He went six furlongs, beginning at the five-furlong pole, under Juan Leyva, the top assistant to trainer John Sadler and a former jockey. :: DRF's Del Mar headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more Del Mar clockers caught Flightline going his opening furlong in 12.40 seconds, then credited him with splits of 24.60, 36.80, 48.40, 1:00, and an official time of 1:12.40 for six furlongs going out to the seven-furlong pole. Flightline, though, wasn’t done. He continued to gallop out sharply past the six-furlong pole, and it wasn’t until after the five-furlong pole, marking a one-mile lap around the oval, that he began to slow noticeably. “That’s good. Perfect. Just relax,” Sadler said to Leyva over a radio. “He went off beautifully relaxed,” Sadler said moments later. :: Get Del Mar Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track.
