Fallen Angel proved to be a fighter when she finished a game second by a length in the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland on Sept. 14. In her first start since May, Fallen Angel set the pace and tried to keep up in the final strides with the four-time Group 1 winner Porta Fortuna. The Matron Stakes was an excellent comeback for Fallen Angel, who may be favored in Sunday’s Group 1 Prix de l’Opera for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris. The winner of the $441,400 Prix de l’Opera receives a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 2. The $551,400 Prix de l’Opera is part of a blockbuster program led by the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Fallen Angel was co-favorite at 7-2 with Ylang Ylang early Friday, with Content at 9-2. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Fallen Angel, trained by Karl Burke, will start at 1 1/8 miles for the first time in her eighth start on Sunday. A four-time winner, Fallen Angel had mixed results in May, finishing eighth in the Group 1 English 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, and rebounding to win the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas three weeks later at the Curragh. Fallen Angel will be near the front, while Content and Ylang Ylang, both trained by Aidan O’Brien, tend to run as closers. Content showed that style with a win in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks for fillies and mares at 1 1/2 miles at York Racecourse in Britain on Aug. 22. Ylang Ylang closed with interest to finish fourth by 1 1/2 lengths in the Matron Stakes. Aside from the Arc and Prix de l’Opera, there are four other Group 1 races on the 10-race Longchamp program, which begins at 7:55 a.m. Eastern or 4:55 a.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com. The day’s shortest-priced favorite will be Zarigana at around 4-5 in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac for 2-year-old fillies at a mile. Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, Zarigana is unbeaten in two starts, the latest of which was a three-length win in the Group 3 Prix d’Aumale at a mile at Longchamp on Sept. 12. Zarigana’s main rival in a field of 10 is Bedtime Story, a winner of 4 of 5 starts for O’Brien, who was last of five as the 4-5 favorite in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on Sept. 15. The winner of the $441,000 Prix Marcel Boussac receives a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 1, while the winner of the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at seven furlongs receives a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Turf. Shippers from Britain and Ireland are expected to dominate the $441,000 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, which drew a field of 10. The O’Brien-trained Henri Matisse, second by three-quarters of a lengths as the 5-6 favorite in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh on Sept. 15, was a slight choice in early betting over Field of Gold, the winner of the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown Park near London Aug. 31 for trainers John and Thady Gosden. Sunday’s $385,900 Prix de l’Abbaye at five furlongs includes a fees-paid berth for the winner to the BC Turf Sprint on Nov. 2. The British-trained Bradsell and Believing meet for the third consecutive time against 14 rivals. Bradsell and Believing were first and second by three-quarters of a length in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Aug. 23, and completed the exacta in the Group 1 Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh on Sept. 14, with Bradsell winning by 1 1/4 lengths. Kinross will be favored to win the $385,900 Prix de la Foret at seven furlongs for the second time. Trained by Ralph Beckett, the 7-year-old Kinross starts in the Prix de la Foret for the fourth consecutive year. He was fourth in 2021, won the race in 2022, and was second last year. On Sept. 14, Kinross won for the first time this year in his fourth start in the Group 2 Park Stakes at seven furlongs at Doncaster Racecourse in Britain. The winner of the Prix de la Foret gains a berth in the BC Mile on Nov. 2. Tribalist, 20-1 winner of the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp at a mile on Sept. 8, and Ramatuelle, third to Porta Fortuna in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, are two other highly respected starters. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
