OZONE PARK, N.Y. – As the first foal out of the champion female sprinter Covfefe, expectations were naturally high for Ellen Jay, whose name mirrors the moniker of her owners, the LNJ Foxwoods Stables of Larry, Nanci, and Jaime Roth. After two disappointing efforts on dirt, Ellen Jay has realized those expectations on turf, winning two straight turf sprints at Ellis Park this summer. Friday, Ellen Jay makes her stakes debut in the $150,000 Glen Cove Stakes for 3-year-old fillies scheduled for six furlongs over Aqueduct’s outer turf course. The Glen Cove, carded as race 5 on Friday’s nine-race card, drew nine turf entrants but Kairyu will scratch to run in Sunday’s Grade 2, $350,000 Franklin Stakes at Keeneland, according to her trainer, Cherie DeVaux. :: Bet with the Best! Fourth and third in two dirt sprints at Churchill Downs in the spring, Ellen Jay found success on the turf, winning a maiden race from just off the pace on July 15 and then dominating an allowance race on the lead Aug. 10. Ellen Jay displayed some immaturity in her turf debut, attempting to lug in during the stretch run and switching to her left lead late. She appeared much more polished in her second turf start. Dustin Dugas, the Belmont-based assistant to Brad Cox, breezed Ellen Jay a half-mile in 49.15 seconds over the Belmont training track on dirt and is not surprised that Ellen Jay has found success on turf. “She moves pretty turfy, not overly turfy,” Dugas said. “She’s a smaller filly, she’s not as thick and stocky as Covfefe was. She does move very nice, breezed very well over the dirt here the other day.” Flavien Prat rides Ellen Jay from post 5. The Glen Cove marks the turf debut of Jody’s Pride, a multiple stakes winner on dirt who finished second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Trainer Jorge Abreu has always felt Jody’s Pride was turf meant and her first two starts as a 2-year-old – including the Matron Stakes – were scheduled for the turf but were rained off. Jody’s Pride won the Busher Stakes at Aqueduct in March, but finished seventh in the Grade 1 Ashland in April. Abreu said Jody’s Pride bled in that race and was given ample time off. Jody’s Pride shows nine works for her return – including one on turf. “She looks pretty fit, she looks like she’s ready to go,” said Abreu, who has Jose Lezcano to ride. Trainer Mark Casse has the uncoupled pair of Time to Dazzle and Ready to Jam in the Glen Cove. Time to Dazzle won the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen at a mile before finishing a close fourth in the Grade 2 Music City Stakes going 6 1/2 furlongs at Kentucky Downs. “She got in all kinds of trouble at Kentucky Downs,” Casse said. “The filly she beat convincingly the time before [Simply in Front] won that race. She can be her own worst enemy. The key to her is one turn.” Casse said the key to Ready to Jam is keeping her sprinting. “She can’t run long,” he said. Agra, who won allowance races going long and short for trainer Bill Mott, Ms. Tart, Nice as Pie, and Irish Maxima complete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
