ARCADIA, Calif. – The Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on Saturday has an expected field of five, led by the division champion of 2024, plus the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby. The small field will affect the number of qualifying points available for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3. Citizen Bull, the champion 2-year-old male of 2024, and Journalism, who vaulted to the fore of Daily Racing Form’s ranking of Kentucky Derby prospects with a win in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 1, lead a cast that includes Barnes, who was second in the San Felipe, the maiden race winner Baeza, and the maiden Westwood. :: DRF Road to the Derby Package Available Now! With less than six starters, the available points for the Kentucky Derby has been reduced by 25 percent, with 75, 37.5, and 18.75 points available to the first three finishers, according to rules published by Churchill Downs. Through Monday, Citizen Bull has amassed 60 qualifying points and ranks ninth on the overall list. Journalism has earned 47.5 points and ranks 14th, while Barnes has 18.75 points and ranks 34th. Baeza and Westwood do not have any qualifying points. Aside from the Santa Anita Derby, run at 1 1/8 miles, there are three other domestic stakes on Saturday and April 12 with qualifying points. In the last four years, horses needed as few as 10 and as many as 45 points to be assured of a Kentucky Derby berth. Barnes, who along with Citizen Bull is trained by Bob Baffert, worked a half-mile in 48 seconds on Monday in company with a stablemate. Fitted with blinkers for the workout, Barnes began behind his workmate and closed along the inside to finish in front under leading jockey Juan Hernandez. Hernandez has the mount on Barnes on Saturday. Barnes did not wear blinkers in his preceding work, on March 23, but has been fitted with the equipment in all three of his starts. The other four expected runners for the Santa Anita Derby worked on Saturday. – additional reporting by Brad Free :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
