After her main rival, Didia, was taken out of the race with a minor injury, Fev Rover looked like she’d be hard to beat in the Beverly D. Stakes on Saturday at Colonial Downs. And after odds-on Fev Rover took a clear lead through a half-mile in a pedestrian 50.10 seconds, it looked like she’d have to fall down to lose. Gina Romantica made an inside run in upper stretch, but Fever Rover swatted her away and drew clear to a 3 1/2-length victory.  The race did not make for compelling viewing, but it did put a first Grade 1 on the resume of 5-year-old Fev Rover, who began her career in England and was good enough at 3 to finish third in the 1000 Guineas.   “The toughest part today was getting her saddled,” winning trainer Mark Casse said. “She can be tough.”  Fev Rover’s first Grade 1 was Javier Castellano’s second $500,000 stakes win on the first Arlington Million card hosted at Colonial, running its first season under Churchill Downs Inc.’s umbrella. CDI owned Arlington Park, home of the Million, the Beverly D., and the Secretariat until the track was closed in 2021 and the property sold.  :: Bet the races with a $250 First Deposit Match + $10 Free Bet and FREE Formulator PPs! Breaking alertly from post 1 while facing just four foes after the scratch of Didia and Rocky Sky, Fev Rover raced with her ears pricked, settled, while taking no pressure through an opening quarter-mile in 25.12 seconds. After her 50-second half-mile split, Fev Rover went her next half in 46.91, getting her final three-sixteenths in 17.54 to finish off Gina Romantica, winner of the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup last year at age 3.  Gina Romantica got home 2 1/4 lengths in front of Romagna Mia, who was making her North American debut. Mise Scene followed along for a relatively close fourth, while Jan’s Girl, a 26-1 shot who didn’t want to settle in the early stages, was a distant last. Fev Rover (99 Beyer Speed Figure) clocked 1:54.35 for 1 3/16 miles over firm turf and paid $3.20.  The Beverly D. is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, offering the winner automatic fees-paid entry into the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, a race to which Fev Rover will be pointed, said Casse, who trains the mare for Tracy Farmer.   By the obscure sire Gutaifan and out of the High Chaparral mare Laurelita, Fev Rover was bred in Ireland and made her first 11 starts there before racing once in Qatar, then coming to Casse’s stable in North America. The mare won the Grade 2 Canadian last August at Woodbine and the Grade 2 Nassau there in her 2023 debut before finishing a somewhat troubled, close third in the Grade 1 Diana last month at Saratoga.   “It’s taken her a little while to understand our racing,” Casse said. “She’s really grown up in the last year.”  A 5-year-old at the peak of her powers, Fev Rover’s best might still be in front of her. But one was in front of her Saturday at Colonial.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
