LEXINGTON, Ky. – With the end of daylight saving time, the sun goes down early these days in horse country. But that’s okay, because some of the finest Thoroughbreds in the country will light up the night – and the bid board – on Monday evening. Fasig-Tipton’s Kentucky fall selected mixed sale, dubbed the Night of the Stars, has assembled its usual glittering lineup for the single-session sale on Nov. 4 at its Newtown Paddocks headquarters in Lexington. There are 314 lots cataloged, including supplemental entries through Oct. 28, with the company continuing to review supplements in the final days leading up to the sale. A highly selective group of well-bred and well-conformed weanlings – including, following early outs, two from the highly anticipated first crop of 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline – kick the evening off before moving onto the racing/broodmare prospects and active broodmares who are the stars of the evening. By Fasig-Tipton’s count, the mares cataloged include 74 who have won graded/group stakes or/and have produced runners to win at that level. Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Jr. described himself as “like a kid in a candy store” regarding the catalog. “My expectations for this November sale are, frankly, just like they are every year for November – they’re sky-high,” Browning said. “They’re high because of the quality of horses that are in the catalog, and they’re high because we’ve set the bar for ourselves very, very, very high. So it’s my expectation that we’ll have a really strong sale because we’ve got really, really quality horses, from foals, to fillies and mares on the racetrack, to in-foal mares. “There’s no reason for there to be any significant change [in the market] from 2023,” Browning added. “I think, overall, we saw the yearling market this year was pretty similar to last year – maybe slightly better at the upper end, and maybe slightly weaker at the lower end. We’re in the fortunate position, for this particular sale where we deal only in terms of quality, so that’s nice. I’m excited. I’m looking forward to it.” Fillies and mares coming directly from the Breeders’ Cup to the sale ring have long been among the major attractions on the Night of the Stars. That angle has produced a sale-topper in three of the past five editions of this sale, with Blue Prize bringing $5 million after winning the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Distaff; Monomoy Girl hammering at $9.5 million after taking the 2020 Distaff; and Goodnight Olive bringing a co-sale-topping $6 million last year, after winning her second edition of the Filly and Mare Sprint. Eight fillies and mares entered in Breeders’ Cup races this weekend at Del Mar are currently scheduled to be shipped across the country following the races to take a turn through the sale ring Monday night. Their plans could change pending their race results, if connections have a change of heart. On the other side of the coin, those with strong results looking to strike while the iron is hot could supplement to the sale late. Ten-time graded stakes winner War Like Goddess, who has earned nearly $3 million, is set to contest the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Owner George Krikorian indicated this week that he could decide to run the mare another year. Fellow Filly and Mare Turf entrant Moira was third in last year’s edition just days before going through the Fasig-Tipton November ring and selling for $3 million. The 2022 Canadian Horse of the Year and classic winner looks to cash in again for Madaket Stables, SF Racing, and X-Men Racing. Two Breeders’ Cup Distaff entrants are cataloged – Grade 1 winner Candied and Grade 2 winner Honor D Lady. Also cataloged are Breeders’ Cup entrants Ag Bullet (Turf Sprint), Chili Flag (Mile), Ramatuelle (Mile), and Soul of an Angel (Filly and Mare Sprint). Strong Incentive, dam of Filly and Mare Sprint favorite Ways and Means, and her Grade 1-winning daughter Surge Capacity are among the active broodmares cataloged with close ties to this year’s Breeders’ Cup. Both are in foal to reigning leading sire Into Mischief, making the foals in utero bred on the same cross as Ways and Means, who is by that stallion’s son Practical Joke. In a Jif, the dam of Turf Sprint favorite Cogburn, also is on offer in foal to Into Mischief. Other dams of Breeders’ Cup entrants cataloged are Curls in Place (in foal to Not This Time), dam of Turf Sprint entrant Big Invasion; Fancy Day (Cody’s Wish), dam of Turf entrant Cabo Spirit; and Sensitively (Epicenter), dam of Juvenile Fillies entrant Non Compliant. A Bolt d’Oro colt out of Curls in Place is among those hoping for a major update from a half-sibling at the Breeders’ Cup, along with a Life Is Good half-sister to Classic entrant Newgate and a Street Sense half-brother to Filly and Mare Sprint entrant One Magic Philly. The stars at the November sale are not limited to Breeders’ Cup connections, however, with multiple other Grade 1 winners and producers cataloged. Among them is Ma’am, dam of this year’s Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan. That colt is by Goldencents, a son of Into Mischief. Ma’am sells in foal to Into Mischief. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
