Reigning Ohio-bred horse of the year Fair and Square added another stakes victory to his résumé, leading throughout to dominate the $100,000 Best of Ohio Governor's Buckeye Cup on Saturday at Thistledown.  Fair and Square ($2.40) helped key a big day for his connections, racing as a homebred for Ohio-based trainer and breeder Tim Hamm's Blazing Meadows Farm and a regular partner in Kentucky-based WinStar Farm. The partnership won three of the five Best of Ohio state showcase races on Saturday, also taking the $100,000 Honey Jay Stakes with Stage Name and the $100,000 Cleveland Kindergarten with Fortissimo.  Fair and Square won a pair of stakes in 2022 and a pair in 2023, highlighted by the Best of Ohio Endurance Stakes on the fall state showcase program to help lock up championship honors. On Saturday, he took the lead early in the 1 1/4-mile Buckeye Cup under Rocco Bowen, and was leading by a length through an honest opening half in 47.48 seconds. He had widened that to two lengths at the quarter pole over a chasing I Wanna Win - the 2022 Endurance winner, and defending winner of the Buckeye Cup in both 2022 and 2023. Fair and Square widened as he pleased to the wire, winning by 4 3/4 lengths and finishing the 10 furlongs in 2:03.80.  :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! General Mathis came on for second by three lengths over I Wanna Win.  In the sister race, the $100,000 Best of Ohio Pay the Man for fillies and mares going a route of ground, Generous Lover ($3.60) continued to prove she is a force to reckon with, dominating a solid field by 12 1/4 lengths as she pleased. She finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.24.  Generous Lover had Luis Rivera in the irons for Joe Sharp, who claimed her earlier this year. The filly, an open-company winner at Fair Grounds and Churchill Downs, raced in the state of her birth for the first time in the Vivacious Stakes on July 19 on the Belterra turf, rolling by 4 3/4 lengths. She switched back to the main track with aplomb on Saturday.  In the $100,000 Best of Ohio Honey Jay for sprinters, Stage Name ($11.20) pulled a mild upset, edging out Alwaysintomischief, who gave a strong account of himself against older horses.  The favored Empire's Fire came into the stretch shaking clear by a length over Alwaysintomischief and Diamond Dust, who had been hounding throughout. Those two weren't done and bore down again. Meanwhile, Stage Name and Angel Diaz came with a five-wide rally and strongest of all. Stage Name was up by a neck at the wire over Alwaysintomischef, who nosed out Diamond Dust for second. It was just another head to Empire's Fire in fourth. They finished the six furlongs in 1:11.24.  The 4-year-old Stage Name races as a homebred for Hamm and WinStar. This was the stakes debut for the consistent gelding, who has now won 7 of 11 career starts, and only missed the board in his debut.  Meanwhile, 3-year-old multiple stakes winner Alwaysintomischief, who had previously been unbeaten in his home state, gave a good effort against his elders.  Hamm and WinStar continued to develop a new star as Fortissimo ($2.40) remained unbeaten in one of the day's 2-year-old stakes, rolling by 3 1/4 lengths under Laureano Sosa in the $100,000 Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten. He previously dominated the Hoover Stakes, after winning his debut.  Silver Kiss ($2.20) also remained unbeaten in three career starts in the sister race, the $100,000 Best of Ohio Miss Ohio. The filly, who had Chelsey Keiser in the irons for the 5 3/4-length score, previously won the Tah Dah Stakes for trainer David Wolochuk. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
