Eye Luv Lulu had been knocking on the door in stakes company in his recent starts, but he finally kicked it down Friday at Belmont Park, scoring the first stakes victory of his career in the $100,000 Affirmed Success. The Affirmed Success, a six-furlong race for New York-breds, was the 10th win from 44 starts for Eye Luv Lulu, a 7-year-old son of Pollard's Vision. Winning trainer Jason Servis is one of five horsemen who have worked with Eye Luv Lulu since he made his first start in October 2013. Weekend Hideaway was sent from post 1 in the Affirmed Success. Eye Luv Lulu, who started from the outside stall in the six-horse field, prompted the early pace from the outside. Eye Luv Lulu disposed of Weekend Hideaway in upper stretch following a quarter-mile in 22.36 and a half in 45.19, and drew well clear. He held off a good but belated bid from Pat On the Back to score by three-quarters of a length. "I just sat there and waited to make my move," jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said. "When I asked him, he was there for me." Eye Luv Lulu, who is owned by Michael Dubb, paid $3.90 and was timed in 1:09.78. It was three lengths back from Pat On the Back to Weekend Hideaway, who held third by a neck over Loki's Vengeance. On March 31, Eye Luv Lulu finished second by three-quarters of a length on New York Claiming Championships Day in the Caixa Eletronica, a starter allowance for horses who have started for $40,000 or less since Jan. 1, 2017. Two starts back, he was second, beaten a length, in the statebred Hollie Hughes Stakes. Eye Luv Lulu was beaten a neck when second in the Hudson Handicap at Belmont last October. The Affirmed Success is the first win for Eye Luv Lulu since Dubb transferred him to Servis five starts ago.
