OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Exotic West's connections had a plan - and a back-up plan. Plan A worked. Plan B won’t be necessary. Exotic West, under Javier Castellano, rallied down the center of Aqueduct’s main track and outfinished a rail-rallying Battle Bling to win the $100,000 Top Flight Invitational by three-quarters of a length. Battle Bling, the 6-5 favorite, finished 3 1/4 lengths in front of Frost Point in third. Ice Princess was fourth followed by the pacesetting Maiden Beauty. Into Vanishing, second in a second-level allowance at Keeneland on Saturday, scratched. Trainer Gary Sciacca entered in the Top Flight when the race was coming up light on entries. He also entered Exotic West back in a second-level allowance for this coming Thursday at Aqueduct. Owner Louis Lazzinnaro said the plan was if Exotic West ran well, but didn’t win, in the Top Flight she would wheel back in Thursday’s allowance. Lazzinnaro harkened to what his friend, the trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., did in 2012 with Willy Beamin, who on Aug. 22 won the Albany Stakes at Saratoga and then came back three days later to win the Grade 1 King’s Bishop. :: For the first time ever, our premium past performances are free! Well, Exotic West is no longer eligible for Thursday’s race, so she’ll have plenty of time between starts. On Sunday, Exotic West saved ground down the backstretch, about two lengths behind Maiden Beauty, who set a modest pace while getting token pressure from Frost Point. Exotic West raced inside of Ice Princess while Battle Bling was last under Trevor McCarthy. Turning for home, Castellano swung Exotic West out wide, while McCarthy, behind the pacesetters, darted to the inside. Exotic West was going better of the two and Battle Bling couldn’t match strides in deep stretch. “I took advantage of my inside post, saved ground stalking behind the speed horses and, when it was time to go, I stepped outside,” Castellano said. “I rode her before and I rode with a lot of patience.” Exotic West, a 4-year-old daughter of Hard Spun, covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.13 and returned $23.40 as the longest shot on the board. Exotic West has now won three of her last four starts and is 5 for 15 in her career. Sciacca claimed Exotic West for $40,000 last August Exotic West’s only loss in her last four starts came in the Ladies Stakes when she stumbled and unseated jockey Dylan Davis. The Ladies was won by Battle Bling, whose late rally Sunday fell short under McCarthy. “With her she’s got a nice eighth of a mile, three sixteenths of a mile run. I was just being patient, I didn’t want to swing five- or six-wide, I just wanted to make sure I had plenty of horse,” McCarthy said. “When she shot to the inside, she gave me a really good kick and she kind of leveled off a little bit when I needed her the most.” :: Want the best bonus in racing?
