OZONE PARK, N.Y. – A pair of statebred second-level allowance sprints going six furlongs, one for older males, the other for older females, top Aqueduct’s eight-race Friday program. In race 2, for males, Elysian Meadows and Ten Cent Town, both return off lengthy layoffs in a six-horse field. Elysian Meadows, trained by Bill Mott, hasn’t been seen since he finished fourth in this condition last Aug. 25 at Saratoga, his first start against older horses. Elysian Meadows, a son of City of Light, won his first two starts against New York-breds in the fall of his 2-year-old year. He went winless in seven starts at 3, six of those coming in stakes, two on turf. “We’d run him quite a bit and we ran him in some tough races, trying some different things,” Mott said. “We gave him a break and he’s coming back okay.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Over the last three years, Mott is 13 for 76 with a $1.33 return on investment with horses returning from a layoff of 180 to 270 days, according DRF Formulator. Ten Cent Town has not run since finishing second, beaten a neck, in this same condition last May 17. Trainer Rick Dutrow did have to stop on him for an unspecified reason, but believes he sees “the same horse as before” coming back to the races. “We like what we saw before he went out, he was a trying-hard, finishing-right-there-with-them horse,” Dutrow said. “We feel like we have the same horse. He should run good, he drew good and it doesn’t look like the toughest two-other-than I’ve ever seen.” Dutrow is just 2 for 27 with a $0.62 ROI bringing horses back off a layoff between 180 and 360 days, according to Formulator. Acoustic Avenue, claimed in December by Wayne Potts for $25,000, has twice run third in the condition when offered for the $45,000 claiming price, which is again the case on Friday. Heavyweight Champs steps up into the next condition following a front-running score in the statebred first-level allowance condition on Feb. 8. He will likely have to be sent from the rail by Romero Maragh. Graywing, claimed for $20,000 by Oscar Barrera III on March 2, and Factually Correct, claimed for $45,000 on Feb. 14, round out the field. In race 7, the 8-year-old mare Mosienko seeks her 12th career victory, stepping up from the statebred $25,000 level. Trained by Ilkay Kantarmaci, Mosienko is coupled with Sue Ellen Mishkin, whom Kantarmaci just claimed for $45,000 from Linda Rice out of a bad race as the favorite in the mud. Speaking of Rice, the leading trainer at this meet with 40 winners, she sends out La Banquera looking for her third straight victory since Rice claimed her for $25,000 in December. After winning for $16,000 on Jan. 18, La Banquera won a statebred first-level allowance by 5 1/2 lengths on Feb. 8. Nolita, trained by Mott, finished third in her first try in this condition on Feb. 9. Jackson’s Dixie, A Maize Zing Dotie, True Empress, and Peak of Chic compete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
