SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It remains to be seen if Echo Zulu and Gunite ever get to see Saratoga’s main track again, but if not, they certainly left their mark at this historic venue throughout their careers. Echo Zulu, a 4-year-old daughter of Gun Runner, won her fourth race in as many starts at Saratoga when she rolled to a 2 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Ballerina Handicap. At 2, Echo Zulu won a maiden and the Grade 1 Spinaway on her way to earning an Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly. The Ballerina victory, Echo Zulu’s third in as many starts this year, puts her atop the female sprint division heading into the Breeders’ Cup on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita. :: Visit the Saratoga Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies, and more. Now, her connections must decide whether to run her in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint against her own gender at seven furlongs, or try the males in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at six furlongs. Echo Zulu earned a second straight 112 Beyer Speed Figure for the Ballerina, establishing her as the favorite potentially for either race. Steve Asmussen trains Echo Zulu for Ron Winchell and L and N Racing. “I love her at seven-eighths of a mile, it depends on what’s on the line, other factors,” Asmussen said Sunday when asked about the possibility of running in the six-furlong Sprint. “Right now, we’re happy with how she came out of the race. We’ll train her back at Saratoga for a bit. Next decision will be when exactly we’re going to go to California with her; everything will depend on how she’s doing. But it’s quite obvious she’s a rare talent.” In the Ballerina, Echo Zulu ran away from Goodnight Olive, who beat Echo Zulu in last year’s Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland. On Saturday, Goodnight Olive finished 6 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Matareya. In addition to Echo Zulu being the favorite in the Filly and Mare Sprint, another reason to keep her in that race is because Gunite will be a tough contender in the Sprint. After losing twice to Elite Power this year, Gunite turned the tables on the reigning Sprint champion Saturday with a 1 3/4-length, front-running victory over Elite Power in the Grade 1 Forego. For Gunite, a 4-year-old son of Gun Runner, he has now won graded stakes here in three consecutive years. At 2, he won the Grade 1 Hopeful and at 3 he won the Grade 2 Amsterdam. He has also finished third in three graded stakes at Saratoga. Asmussen said it was “extremely gratifying” for Gunite to get that victory after losing the Vanderbilt to Elite Power by a head on July 29. “Nothing but respect for who Elite Power is, just very much felt Gunite deserved that,” Asmussen said. “He’s pure hickory. For him to take the tough defeat and come out of it better is very special.” Gunite, who earned a 101 Beyer Speed Figure for the Forego, could have another race before the Breeders’ Cup, Asmussen said. Meanwhile, Elite Power will train up to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, trainer Bill Mott said. “That was the plan beforehand, it would have been nice coming off a win like [last year],” Mott said. Mott said a combination of things could have contributed to Gunite turning the tables on Elite Power, including the pace. Gunite was on the lead through a half-mile in a rather modest 46.20 seconds. “There was a pedestrian pace for that type of race,” Mott said. “Was going to the inside a factor? I can’t blame him for that. It’s the shortest way home.” Cody’s Wish gets back to work Cody's Wish, who had his seven-race win streak end when he finished third in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes on Aug. 5, got back to the worktab Sunday, breezing a half-mile in 50.45 seconds over Saratoga’s Oklahoma training track. He went his opening quarter in 25.52 seconds and galloped five furlongs in 1:04.60. “Got to get the first one in him,” Mott said. “He was just galloping.” Mott said the day after the Whitney that the Grade 2, $250,000 Vosburgh Stakes at Aqueduct on Sept. 30 would be the next start for Cody’s Wish as his prep for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
