East Avenue, the potential favorite for next Friday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and Jonathan’s Way, one of his main threats, both put in their final workouts Friday morning at Churchill Downs. East Avenue, impressive winner of the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland last out, was timed in 1:00.20 for five furlongs. Tyler Gaffalione was aboard for the work, which was done in company with the 3-year-old San Silo, recent winner of a first-level allowance at Churchill. “Everything went good, it looked like he went around there as he does in a nice, even work and galloped out good and strong,” trainer Brendan Walsh said. “Tyler was very happy with him. He moved great, cooled out great so everything is in good shape for next week.” A little later Friday morning, Jonathan’s Way, winner of the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill in mid-September, went a half-mile in 49.20 seconds. Jonathan’s Way worked inside of a stablemate, Our Favorite Son, the pair having to go three and four wide around a pair of workers, coincidentally, from the Walsh barn. Jonathan’s Way then galloped out another strong quarter-mile past the wire. :: ON SALE NOW: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages! The plan was to go 48 and change for a half, as wide as he went, we accomplished that. The gallop-out was what I was looking for, when he asked him to go, the horse had a nice turn of foot.” East Avenue was scheduled to ship to California on Saturday. Jonathan’s Way is scheduled to ship on Monday. Pletcher to forgo some final works Though trainer Todd Pletcher put Fierceness through a final workout for the Breeders’ Cup on Friday and planned to have Tapit Trice breeze on Saturday at Belmont Park, he said several of his other Breeders’ Cup horses would not work again prior to next week’s event. Candied (Distaff), Grand Sonata (Turf), Mentee (Juvenile Turf), Noble Confessor (Juvenile Turf), Tenacious Leader (Juvenile Turf), and Gate to Wire (Juvenile Turf Sprint) would simply gallop up to their races, having done their final works last week. “Just trying to keep them happy,” Pletcher said. “They all had productive breezes last week. Candied especially had a monstrous gallop-out. Her last couple of races we haven’t breezed her six or seven days out before. She seemed to respond well, so we’re going to do that again.” :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more ◗ At Saratoga, BC Turf contender Far Bridge worked a half-mile in 50 seconds over the Oklahoma turf course.
