Eagles Flight, a half-brother to 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline, has sustained a “minor setback” and will miss the early weeks of the Del Mar summer meeting, trainer John Sadler said on Thursday. A 3-year-old, Eagles Flight has started once, scoring an attractive win by 2 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong maiden race at Santa Anita on May 27. He had a half-mile workout on June 10, but has not had a published work in recent weeks. “He’s had a little delay,” Sadler said. “He’ll be in training at Del Mar and maybe he’ll run toward the end of the meet.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Eagles Flight was bred by Jane Lyon’s Summer Wind Equine and is co-owned by Lyon, Hronis Racing, and W.S. Farish. Sadler has a contender in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar on Aug. 10 in A. Z. Wildcat, the winner of a maiden race at five furlongs in her first start at Los Alamitos last Sunday. Ridden by Hector Berrios, A. Z. Wildcat stalked the early pace before rallying wide to lead in the stretch. She pulled clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths as the 2-1 favorite, finishing in 57.48 seconds. Sadler said he was “thrilled” with the win. “She won comfortably,” he said. “We liked her to win first time out.” By Munnings, A. Z. Wildcat was purchased for $200,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale last year and is owned by Hronis Racing. The $150,000 Sorrento Stakes is run at six furlongs, and is a prep for the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 7. The opening day of the Del Mar meeting includes the restricted Oceanside Stakes, a $100,000 race for 3-year-olds at a mile on turf. Sadler said on Thursday that he has three potential runners in Cathal, Island Cruiser, and Scatify. Cathal, an Irish-bred colt by No Nay Never, won a maiden race at a mile on turf at Santa Anita in his second start in the United States on June 2. Island Cruiser won a six-furlong allowance race on turf at Santa Anita on May 4, finishing a half-length in front of Scatify, who returned to finish second in the Affirmed Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on dirt at Santa Anita on June 9. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
