The synthetic surface at the Ocala Training Center is known to play kindly to speed, which should make Dynatail especially hard to beat in the $100,000 fillies’ division of the OBS Championship Stakes on Tuesday. Dynatail has scored impressive, front-running victories in turf routes in her last two starts for trainer Mike Dini and will be looking for her first stakes victory in the 1 1/16-mile race. The OBS Championship is one of four stakes for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds on an 11-race card that includes seven races for Quarter Horses. The annual OBS Day of Champions is the only day of live racing in Marion County, the heart of Florida horse country, and typically draws about 5,000 local residents. The four stakes races are for horses who have passed through the sales ring at an Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. auction. The other stakes are the $100,000 males’ division of the OBS Championship at 1 1/16 miles and two $50,000 divisions of the six-furlong OBS Sprint, including one restricted to fillies. Parimutuel wagering is available on all of the Quarter Horse races and the fillies’ division of the OBS Sprint. Dynatail is using Tuesday’s race as a prep for the Grade 3 Florida Oaks on the Tampa Bay Downs turf course March 11. In the fourth start of her career Dec. 3, she scored by 2 1/4 lengths in a $20,000 maiden special weight race going a mile on the Tampa turf and earned a 79 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest mark in Tuesday’s field. The runner-up from that race, Mo Justice, returned to win her maiden impressively Dec. 31. Most recently, Dynatail led throughout a first-level allowance at 1 1/16 miles on the Tampa grass on Jan. 1 to win by 5 3/4 lengths over Bella Vincenza, who returns for Tuesday’s race. Dynatail, owned by Ballybrit Stable LLC, has raced once on a synthetic surface, finishing second in her career debut at Presque Isle Downs in September. Orlando Bocachica, aboard for the Jan. 1 victory, retains the mount from post 5 in the 11-horse field. “She’s doing super,” Dini said. “There’s a lot of speed in there, so we’ll see what happens when the gates open. I’m not going to kill her on the lead because I know she can close too, so we’ll just break, see what happens, and leave it up to the jock. I would think she’ll probably be on the lead, but it’s never a guarantee.” Among the other contenders are Fun, Bill’s Legacy, and Miss O’Hara. Trained by Ian Wilkes, Fun was second in the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga in July and third in the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland in October. She turned in a bullet five-furlong workout in 1:00.80 at Palm Meadows on Thursday. Bill’s Legacy and Miss O’Hara each scored a 72 Beyer for a maiden win on turf. ◗ The males’ division of the OBS Championship drew a field of nine. Shiraz steps down from the Grade 3 Dania Beach Stakes, a turf race at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 7 in which he finished third, beaten three lengths by Made You Look. Jose Ortiz has the mount for trainer Mike Maker. Master Plan enters the race off a runner-up finish in the $75,000 Pulpit Stakes in the slop at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 10 for trainer Todd Pletcher. Adonis Creed, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin; Major Key, conditioned by Luis Ramirez; and Convict Pike, trained by Rusty Arnold, all enter off maiden wins on the Gulfstream Park turf. ◗ Uncle B and Sailing Home, who finished second and third in the Swynford Stakes at Woodbine in November, are among the major players in the males’ division of the OBS Sprint, which drew a field of nine. Uncle B fired a bullet workout for trainer Nick Gonzalez at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 6, a half-mile in 47 seconds. Sailing Home, trained by Mark Casse, is cross-entered in the OBS Championship but has made both of his starts at six furlongs. The field also includes Front Loaded, who has placed in three restricted stakes for trainer Jose Pinchin, and Storming My Way, the runner-up in the Juvenile Sprint Stakes for Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park West in November. ◗ The fillies’ division of the OBS Sprint drew a field of 11, with Yes I’ll Go pegged as the 3-1 morning-line favorite for new trainer Armando De la Cerda. The filly romped by nine lengths for trainer Jorge Navarro in her career debut at Gulfstream Park West in November and earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure that stands out in Tuesday’s field. Most recently, she was a well-beaten fifth in the $75,000 House Party Stakes last month at Gulfstream. Other contenders include Spirituality (9-2) and Lady Racer (12-1), both trained by Pletcher. Two starts back, Spirituality was third in the Grade 3 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park in October. She and Lady Racer have both been training well at Palm Beach Downs. Lady Racer, a daughter of Biondetti who sold for $125,000 as a 2-year-old, finished far back in her only start, a maiden race in the slop at Gulfstream last month.
