ELMONT, N.Y. – Having won with his first starter in more than 10 years on Saturday at Belmont Park, trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. will look to go 2 for 2 on Thursday when he runs Timbuktu in a starter allowance that goes as Thursday’s eighth race at Belmont Park. The 1 1/16-mile starter allowance is for horses who have started for a claiming price of $50,000 or less and are eligible for the first-level allowance condition. Timbuktu won for $30,000 claiming last fall when in the barn of James Bond. Timbuktu made three starts for Michelle Nevin and one for Mark Shuman before being turned over to Dutrow. Timbuktu is owned by Karen Murphy, one of the attorneys who tried to help Dutrow during his 10-year banishment by New York state regulators for a history of transgressions. Dutrow got his license back earlier this spring and last Saturday – with most of the racing world fixated on Churchill Downs – he sent out Prince of Pharoahs to victory in a first-level allowance race. Dutrow had claimed the horse for $45,000 on April 7 for owners Sanford Goldfarb, Matthew Morrison, and Crown Stable. Asked Monday how it felt to win his first race back, Dutrow said “Better than getting beat. We liked him, so we were hopeful that he was going to run big and it looked like to me our horse showed up and no one else in the race really did. We went ahead and cashed our tickets and moved on.” :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! When looking at Timbuktu, Dutrow said “It looks like he’s live in there. He likes Belmont.” Dutrow said his stable is up to 16 horses and he’s expecting more to be coming his way. “That’s what they [owners] keep telling me,” he said. Dreams of Tomorrow drops Earlier on Thursday’s card, Dreams of Tomorrow should appreciate some class relief and a return to Belmont when he heads a field of five entered in a third-level/optional $80,000 claiming race scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf course. Dreams of Tomorrow finished seventh in a competitive Appleton Stakes on April 1 at Gulfstream Park, compromised by breaking from the outside in an 11-horse field. “He was wide the whole way, it’s a better race than it looks,” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “He’s fresh. I think he’s doing good, it’s a good spot for him. Hopefully, he runs well and we can move along from there.” There is little to no speed in this five-horse field. Dreams of Tomorrow has raced close to the pace in the past. McGaughey blew Dreams of Tomorrow out in 37.60 seconds over the Belmont main track Monday morning in an attempt to sharpen him up. St Anthony and Daunt are both making their seasonal debuts in this spot. St Anthony, trained by Neil Drysdale, is making his first start since Dec. 3 when he finished sixth, beaten only three lengths in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. He has won minor stakes at Golden Gate and Santa Rosa. Daunt, trained by Robert Ribuado, hasn’t run since he finished fourth in the Grade 2 Red Smith on Nov. 26 at Aqueduct. Daunt is skipping a condition running in this spot, but Ribaudo said the second-level allowance condition race was rained off the turf and he didn’t want to wait for the next one. Ribaudo acknowledged the 1 1/16 miles of this race are shorter than Daunt wants to run. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures “We need to get him started, we don’t have any options,” Ribaudo said. “He looks really good, outside of the distance, he looks ready to go.” ◗ Ottoman Fleet gave trainer Charlie Appleby his first New York winner in 2023, winning Saturday’s Grade 2 Fort Marcy Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths and earning a 102 Beyer Speed Figure in the process. This Saturday, Appleby will try for his next New York victory when he sends out Warren Point in the Grade 1, $600,000 Man o’ War. Warren Point has won 4 of 7 starts and is coming off a runner-up finish in The Amir Trophy in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 18. On Sunday, Warren Point worked five furlongs in 1:00.88 over the Belmont turf course. Others expected for the Man o’ War include Howe Street, Red Knight, Solider Rising, and Strong Quality. Channel Maker, Therapist, and Verstappen are possible. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
