HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Like just about everyone else, trainers Danny Gargan and Tim Yakteen were caught off guard when a full field of 12 3-year-olds was drawn for Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby. And neither was pleased when his horse drew an outside post position for the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby prep. Dubyuhnell, trained by Gargan, and Fort Bragg, trained by Yakteen, drew posts 12 and 10, respectively. But despite having to overcome their statistically disadvantageous draw in races decided at a mile and one-eighth at Gulfstream Park, neither Gargan nor Yakteen was looking at alternative plans for his horse. Dubyuhnell and Fort Bragg both are seeking to earn enough qualifying points on Saturday to secure a spot in the Kentucky Derby lineup. “An outside draw didn’t scare me,” Gargan said. “Actually, we wanted to be on the outside, but I never dreamed it would wind up a 12 horse field and we’d be that far outside. I still don’t think all those horses will actually run. So many of them just don’t belong. I can’t believe those owners would be that stupid to run them in there.” :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Available every race day. Dubyuhnell, who lost his best chance when he got jammed up in traffic in the run to the first turn as the favorite in the Sam F. Davis last month at Tampa Bay Downs, has 10 Derby qualifying points, earned for his victory in the Grade 2 Remsen at 2. Gargan acknowledged he could pull Dubyuhnell out of the Florida Derby to await the Wood the following Saturday at Aqueduct, but as of Sunday was not considering that option. “We could scratch and go to the Wood, but that’s going to be a full field as well and we could just as easily draw way outside in there too,” Gargan said. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2023: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more Fort Bragg worked five furlongs in 59.40 Sunday at Santa Anita. Shortly after the work, Yakteen confirmed Fort Bragg was still on schedule to ship to South Florida later this week. Fort Bragg, with 5 Derby qualifying points, would likely need to finish third or better in the Florida Derby to have a legitimate chance of cracking the Kentucky Derby lineup. Joel Rosario rides Fort Bragg in the Florida Derby. “He worked beautifully this morning,” said Yakteen on Sunday. “The post isn’t ideal, but we’re not going to change our plans. We’ll just leave it up to Joel to ride his own race.” Post positions are the least of Gargan and Yakteen’s worries on Saturday considering they must deal with the awesome presence of division leader Forte, who also drew poorly in post 11 but still figures to be the odds-on favorite in the Florida Derby. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
