HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Trainer Randy Morse plans to focus on one-turn races with Dreaminblue for the immediate future, and the plan goes into effect Friday when the 3-year-old cuts back in distance for the ninth race at Oaklawn Park. The first-level allowance will be run over six furlongs and carries an optional claiming price of $200,000. The field of 10 includes R Heisman, winner of the $101,000 Graduation Stakes last August at Del Mar; and Perfect Force, a promising half-brother to Grade 2 winner Scuba. Nacho Bar, Optical, R Heisman, Baby Boat, and Thunderhawk all were entered with the $200,000 claiming tag. Dreaminblue could go favored when he starts from post 2. “What I’m thinking is if he runs well here, we’ll look at the Pat Day Mile,” Morse said of the Grade 2, $600,000 race on May 3 at Churchill Downs. Dreaminblue put up a 94 Beyer Speed Figure – the second highest for a 3-year-old so far this year at Oaklawn – when winning a maiden special weight at six furlongs on Jan. 25. He is coming off a start in the Grade 2 Rebel, a 1 1/16-mile race in which he finished ninth of 13. Dreaminblue ended up 12 1/4 lengths behind winner Coal Battle and earned a Beyer of 72. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! I know he can go three-quarters, so a $130,000 allowance race, I think it’s hard to pass up.” Morse said he’s not ruling out two-turn races in the future, as Dreaminblue is still a developing horse as a May foal. He’s a son of Street Boss and the Curlin mare Dreamy Blues. The big Beyer race from Dreaminblue came following a close runner-up finish at the same level and distance Dec. 29. Dreaminblue was beaten a head by Innovator, an entrant in Saturday’s Jeff Ruby Steaks. For that effort, Dreaminblue earned a Beyer of 87. “Hopefully, he’ll run back to those two sprint races,” Morse said. “We tried him a mile [before that]. I didn’t think it was the distance. He just kind of ran in spurts. We put the blinkers on him, and that seemed to help a lot. But, bottom line is, he didn’t run as well [at two turns], so to me it makes sense to get him back short.” Cristian Torres has the mount on Dreaminblue for the partnership of Randy Patterson, Sam Vogel, and Joe Morgan. “Hopefully, he’s within four or five lengths of them heading for home and he can finish,” Morse said. R Heisman also is cutting back to one turn off a sixth-place finish in a first-level allowance at 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn. His win in the Graduation came at 5 1/2 furlongs. Ramon Vazquez has the mount from post 4 for trainer Peter Miller. Perfect Force is facing winners for the first time after a maiden special weight win over six furlongs March 2. He earned a Beyer of 87, which is the best last-race number in Friday’s field. Rafael Bejarano has the mount for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. ◗ Friday’s 10th race is an allowance sprint that drew stakes winners Ryvit, Run Classic, Durante, Frosted Departure, Sir Wellington, and Glengarry. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
