Dr. Zarnett overcame a bump at the start for a game win in the $75,000 Buckeye Native Stakes for Ohio-accredited older horses on the turf.  Dr. Zarnett ($11.40) bumped with Bronze Kettle at the start and was in fifth in the field of 12 early, under a stout hold from Jareth Loveberry. He had worked his way out of traffic to sit third on the far turn, and turning for home, had only First Song, always prominently-placed, 1 1/2 lengths in front of him. He ate into that margin in a steady drive, and kicked clear in the final stages to win by 1 3/4 lengths.  The final time for the 1 1/16 miles on turf rated good was 1:42.35.  :: Bet the races with a $250 First Deposit Match + $10 Free Bet and FREE Formulator PPs! After First Song in second, it was 3 3/4 lengths back to Excitement in third, with favored Big Truck another 2 1/2 lengths behind the latter.  This was the first stakes victory for Dr. Zarnett, who was claimed by trainer Shane Meyers for $7,500 out of a start in April at Thistledown. He has two seconds and two wins since that, including a runner-up effort in the George Lewis Memorial Stakes on dirt in June. He has now won nine times overall from 46 career starts.  Earlier on the card, Soft Talk upset last year's state-bred champion juvenile filly Back to Ohio in the $75,000 Tomboy Stakes for Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies, in the first start on turf for both.  Trainer Joe Sharp had intended to put Soft Talk ($13.20), by the versatile sire Midshipman, on the turf against older females last time out. She finished a good second to I Recall in the Vivacious Stakes, rained off the turf at Belterra on July 22. Given a chance to get on turf at last, Soft Talk came into the stretch a head in front of Back to Ohio after both stalked the pace, and widened through the stretch to a 4 1/4-length victory. She stopped the clock in 1:40.63 for the 1 1/16 miles.  Back to Ohio, also by Midshipman, won three stakes last year, including the Best of Ohio John Galbreath Memorial on the fall state showcase program. The filly, who was also debuting on turf but a prior winner on Tapeta, had Loveberry in the irons for Larry Rivelli. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
