HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Dornoch, winner of the Grade 2 Remsen, and Locked, who finished a distant third as the tepid favorite in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, will make their much-anticipated 3-year-old debuts and figure to be the likely favorites in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.  The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth lured a field of nine, including Locked’s stablemate Speak Easy, who trainer Todd Pletcher also has entered in a 1 1/8-mile allowance race here on Friday. Dornoch set the pace, then reasserted himself after being passed by Sierra Leone approaching the furlong marker, to prevail by a nose in the Remsen. He subsequently had the race flattered twice over, after the runner-up returned last week to capture the Risen Star at the Fair Grounds and third-place finisher Drum Roll Please came back to register a popular and very easy victory in the Jerome in his next start. Dornoch has spent the winter at Palm Meadows, where he’s worked five times in preparation for the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth, including four furlongs in 48.00 on Saturday, according to Daily Racing Form clocker Donald Harris, who timed him galloping out six furlongs in 1:15.80 for trainer Danny Gargan. Regular rider Luis Saez again takes the call for Dornoch, who breaks from post 5. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Locked won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity in his first start around two turns last fall at Keeneland, but was never a serious factor in the Breeders’ Cup, rallying mildly to finish third nearly seven lengths behind stablemate and reigning Juvenile champion Fierceness.  Locked missed a scheduled start in the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs and some subsequent training time due to a fever, but has gotten in two works at Palm Beach Downs since getting back on track. On Saturday, Locked breezed five furlongs in 1:01.65, his final quarter coming in 23.47 before galloping out six panels in 1:15.37 in company with stablemate Foxhole per Racing Form clocker David Norton. His regular rider, Jose Ortiz, was aboard. Locked drew post 8 for the Fountain of Youth. Speak Easy, who will break from the rail if Pletcher chooses to run him in the Fountain of Youth, isn’t the only horse in the field cross-entered in Friday’s nine-furlong allowance event. Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. did likewise with his lightly raced Merit, who finished third after contesting the pace with the odds-on Born Noble in a one-mile allowance test earlier this month. “Speak Easy was super impressive, figures wise, in his maiden win, we think our horse will improve off his last run, so, basically, we just want to keep our options open, ” said Joseph, who named Edgard Zayas to ride. The remainder of the field includes Le Dom Bro (Edwin Gonzalez); Victory Avenue (John Velazquez); Real Macho (Tyler Gaffalione); Frankie’s Empire (Miguel Vasquez); and Dancing Groom (Javier Castellano). :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
