While the focus of his older male turf division centers on Integration and Battle of Normandy, entered in this Saturday’s Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf, trainer Shug McGaughey appears to have an up-and-comer in the division in Deuteronomy. A 4-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy out of the three-time graded stakes-winning mare Hit it Rich, Deuteronomy won his second straight race last Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, taking a first-level allowance at 1 1/8 miles by 1 3/4 lengths. That race, in which he split horses nicely under Samy Camacho and drew clear, came five weeks after he won a one-mile allowance race Tampa. “His two races have been good. He was really good the other day,” said McGaughey, who trains Deuteronomy for Stuart Janney III. “I think he’s learning. I think he has a future.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. McGaughey said he’s not sure where Deuteronomy would run next, but he would look to run him longer than shorter. There is the Grade 2, $200,000 Mac Diarmida Stakes going 1 3/8 miles on March 1 at Gulfstream, or McGaughey could find another allowance or point toward something at Keeneland in the spring. Deuteronomy has given McGaughey two of his four wins from eight starts at the Tampa meet. On Jan. 17, McGaughey won a maiden race with the 3-year-old Statesman, a son of Constitution, who captured a mile and 40-yard maiden event by a neck. In December, Citational, a daughter of Into Mischief, won a mile and 40-yard maiden race by 10 1/4 lengths. McGaughey said Citational is scheduled to run this weekend in a first-level allowance at Tampa. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
