Beginning with his first career appearance at Turfway Park on Saturday, California-based jockey Frankie Dettori will travel extensively in the coming weeks to ride major races in Dubai, Santa Anita, and Keeneland. Dettori has nine mounts at Turfway Park, including Dancing Groom in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks, an important prep for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 4. Next week, Dettori is scheduled to travel to the United Arab Emirates where he will be aboard Newgate in the $12 million Dubai World Cup on March 30. Dettori will ride at Keeneland on the opening day of the track’s spring meeting on April 5 before returning to Santa Anita the following day for the Santa Anita Derby program. Santa Anita does not race on the weekend of April 13-14, which will lead Dettori back to Keeneland that week, according to his agent, Ron Anderson. Dettori, 53, is in the midst of an outstanding winter-spring meeting at Santa Anita. Through Thursday, he has won 28 races since the Dec. 26 opening day, and ranks fourth in the jockey standings behind leader Juan Hernandez who has 46 wins. Dettori’s wins include the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on Newgate and the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on Imagination, a candidate for the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
