Stella Noir will race as far as a mile for the first time Monday in an allowance race for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita. Her opponents include Moraz and Velvet Slippers, who have experience at the distance. Stellar Noir, trained by Keith Desormeaux, finished second in the $75,000 Lucky Spell Stakes at six furlongs on Sept. 24 at Los Alamitos. The way she closed in that race suggests she will handle the mile. “She’s been galloping out so well we thought we’d try,” Desormeaux said Friday. “There is always a little bit of apprehension. “She’s got a nice, long, efficient stride that tells me the distance won’t be a problem. She might lean toward sprinting, pedigree wise, but I’ve got to try her.” :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and Betting Strategies.  Stella Noir, by Stay Thirsty, is out of Guadalupe High, a multiple stakes winner at a mile at Delta Downs in Louisiana in 2013 and 2014. Stellar Noir won her debut in a maiden special weight race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita in March and has had four subsequent starts. She is owned by Rose Hill Farm, Wayne Detmar, Gene Voss, and Desormeaux. The allowance race is the final event on Monday’s 10-race card. Stellar Noir drew the rail in a field of nine. Stellar Noir, who will be ridden by Edwin Maldonado, finished two lengths behind Livingmybestlife in the Lucky Spell Stakes. “She was gaining on the winner,” Desormeaux said. “We’re encouraged.” Moraz finished 11th at 62-1 in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs. In her only subsequent start, Moraz was third by a neck as the 8-5 favorite in an allowance race for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on turf on Sept. 4 at Del Mar. Moraz won a maiden special weight race at a mile at Santa Anita by 11 lengths in January and was second or third in three consecutive graded stakes around two turns from early February to early April. Her race last out was her first on turf, and trainer Michael McCarthy called the effort “decent.” “She looks like she’ll be effective on both surfaces,” he said. “We’re jumping into this race to see which direction to go.” Moraz and Velvet Slippers, trained by Bob Baffert, have shown speed at times. Velvet Slippers led throughout a maiden special weight race at a mile on Sept. 2 at Del Mar, and closed from last of five to finish second by a neck in the $75,000 Dark Mirage Stakes at a mile for 3-year-old fillies on Sept. 19 at Los Alamitos. German Derby winner coming Sisfahan, winner of the Group 1 German Derby in Hamburg in July, is being pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Nov. 6 at Del Mar, according to published reports. Sisfahan, trained by Hank Grewe for Darius Racing, started twice against older horses in Group 1 races at 1 1/2 miles in Germany in September. The BC Turf is run at 1 1/2 miles, the same distance as the German Derby. Sisfahan was second to eventual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Torquator Tasso in the Grosser Preis von Baden at Baden-Baden on Sept. 4, and third behind 11-10 favorite Alpinista in the Preis Von Europe on Sept. 26 at Cologne. Torquator Tasso, who won the Arc at 72-1, is not expected to start in the BC Turf, although runner-up Tarnawa is a candidate. Tarnawa won the 2020 BC Turf at Keeneland. More speed for Oviatt Class Oviatt Class closed from last of seven to finish third in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes for 2-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles on Oct. 1 at Santa Anita. His next start comes in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at the same distance on Nov. 5 at Del Mar, and trainer Keith Desormeaux expects Oviatt Class to use a slightly different tactic. “The horse is so laid back he let himself get too far back,” Desormeaux said. “I believe he can stay a little closer.” Owned by James Downey, Oviatt Class closed from eighth of nine to win a maiden special weight race by 4 1/4 lengths going a mile on Aug. 27 at Del Mar. “We’re shooting for the stars with him,” Desormeaux said of the BC Juvenile. “We’re fully in preparation.” Desormeaux, 54, knows what it takes to win the BC Juvenile, having done so in 2014 with Texas Red, a 13-1 upsetter. Texas Red finished third behind American Pharoah in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita in his final prep for the Breeders’ Cup. American Pharoah did not start in the BC Juvenile. The FrontRunner was renamed the American Pharoah Stakes in 2018 in honor of the 2015 Triple Crown winner.
