ETOBICOKE, Ontario – With 996 wins to his credit, trainer Mike DePaulo is closing in on a career milestone. He could creep closer to that goal when sending out Sugar Buzz, Its in the Cards, and Reggie Boy in Thursday’s fifth race at Woodbine. Sugar Buzz should be favored in the hybrid event for Ontario-sired and $40,000 maiden 2-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles. A son of North America’s leading turf sire Twirling Candy, Sugar Buzz missed the board in his first two races while sprinting before finding his niche going long this fall. Sugar Buzz rallied outside from sixth to finish a clear second ahead of next-out winner Hammerhead in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special on the main turf Sept. 15. Victorious Ashley’s Archer subsequently crossed the wire on top in the Cup and Saucer Stakes before getting disqualified. When switching to the Tapeta on Oct. 6, Sugar Buzz raced quite wide from post 12 before checking in sixth in a slow-paced route, ending up 4 3/4 lengths behind the winner. A hot Leo Salles retains the mount on Sugar Buzz, who is taking a notable drop from maiden special weight company to compete for the $40,000 tag. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! The son of Society’s Chairman is bred to run on and is picking up jockey Jason Hoyte, who is 1 for 13 at the meet for the barn. Reggie Boy was beaten double digits in both of his races going short at this level. The average winning distance of his Queen’s Plate-winning sire Shaman Ghost’s progeny is 6.7 furlongs, and the gelding is bred to sprint on the dam’s side. Juan Crawford takes over in the irons. The journeyman has been heating up at the meet while particularly effective on longshots. Lasting Silence looks inviting in his first venture around two turns. He beat two next-out winners when fourth most recently while stretching to seven furlongs. His dam has produced two route winners here on the Tapeta from as many starters. Rafael Hernandez retains the mount. Hernandez combined with trainer Dale Desruisseaux to score on the debuting juvenile Church and State last Friday. Royal Entry saved ground all the way en route to finishing fourth when going from a sprint to a route at second asking Oct. 27. The son of stamina sire Point of Entry has since worked twice for trainer Mike Doyle, who will give David Moran a leg up. Lonny’s Gamble had a wide journey when sixth behind Lasting Silence on Oct. 6 and is stretching out with a blend of speed and stamina in his pedigree. Leading jockey Sahin Civaci rides for trainer Josie Carroll. Good King Sam recently changed trainers again to Stuart Simon, who is removing blinkers after the colt came up empty in his local debut. Completing the field are Baytown Shinjuku and I’manislandboy. Post time for the eight-race program is 4:50 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
