After swinging for the fences and missing in the Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf, De Regreso drops back into a more suitable spot Thursday in a second-level allowance/optional $62,500 claiming race scheduled for one mile and 70 yards over Gulfstream Park’s Tapeta surface. De Regreso is 2 for 5 over the Tapeta track, including a victory in the Martha Washington Stakes going 1 1/16 miles on June 8 at Gulfstream. That followed a victory in the Honey Ryder Stakes on turf in May. Since the Martha Washington, De Regreso has been in some tough spots but did run third in a pair of listed stakes on turf, including the Tropical Park Oaks where De Regreso was beaten just three lengths by See You Around. That filly came back to run a solid second behind Saffron Moon in the Grade 3 Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in her next start. In Our Time, second in the Tropical Park Oaks, ran third in the Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf and second in the Grade 3 Honey Fox. At 58-1, De Regreso was the longest shot in an 11-horse field in the Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf, where she raced close up to a fast pace before backing up to finish last. Antonio Sano, trainer of De Regreso, said an endoscopic examination after the race showed mucus in De Regreso’s trachea. :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! With that cleared up and the drop in class, Sano is bullish on his filly’s chances Thursday. “She likes synthetic, she won two races on Tapeta, she’s 100 percent sound,” Sano said. “For me, she’s the one to beat.” With 20 wins at the meet, Sano is sixth in the Gulfstream Park standings at the winter meet, which has two weeks remaining. John Velazquez, who has ridden three winners for Sano at this meet and rode De Regreso in the Tropical Park Oaks, has the call. Nineteenamendment is one of four horses coming out of a similar spot as this, albeit it on turf, on Feb. 15. Nineteenamendment raced wide throughout that day and finished fourth by a neck, beaten 3 3/4 lengths. She’s Fire, trained by Kevin Rice, was a winner going both short and long in allowance races over the synthetic surface at Presque Isle Downs last summer. Tito’s Calling, Dozen Diamonds, She Prospers, and Oh Darlin complete the field. Five G likely to stay local Five G, runner-up to Quietside in the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn last out, is under consideration for both the Grade 2, $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks on March 29 and the Grade 1, $750,000 Ashland on April 4 at Keeneland, trainer George Weaver said Monday. While the Grade 1 status and inflated purse at Keeneland are alluring, Five G could very well be favored in the Gulfstream Oaks, a field that is not expected to come up extremely deep. “From a strategic standpoint, the Gulfstream Oaks is a good way to get to the [Kentucky] Oaks with five weeks on both sides,” Weaver said. “It’s running right here. She’s doing really well. I think she’d fit in either spot.” Five G also owns a win over Gulfstream Park’s main track, having taken the Cash Run on New Year’s Day by nine lengths. On Friday, Five G worked a half-mile in 50.60 seconds at Palm Beach Downs. Weaver said he would do something more serious with the filly this week. Weaver said Five G will likely be entered in the Gulfstream Oaks, a race that offers its top five finishers points toward the Kentucky Oaks. Provided six horses run in the race, points will be distributed on a 100-50-25-15-10 basis. Only 75 percent of the points will be awarded if there is only a five-horse field. As of Monday, others expected or under consideration for the Gulfstream Oaks include Davona Dale winner The Queens M G, Forward Gal winner Eclatant, and recent allowance winners Anna’s Promise and Paradise City. Meanwhile, Weaver said that the 3-year-old colt Colloquial is on schedule for a likely start in the $400,000 Lafayette Stakes on April 4 at Keeneland. Colloquial, a son of Vekoma, came off an eight-month layoff to win a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race at Aqueduct by seven lengths on Feb. 7, earning a 106 Beyer Speed Figure. Colloquial has had two well-spaced workouts since then and is scheduled to breeze again later this week, Weaver said. ◗ One 3-year-old filly to keep in mind for the future is Shred the Gnar, who on Sunday rolled to a 6 1/2-length maiden victory going a mile at Gulfstream Park. It was the filly’s second start after having gotten beat a neck going six furlongs in her debut Feb. 9. Shred the Gnar, a daughter of Into Mischief and a full sister to the multiple Grade 3 stakes winner Owendale, earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure after running a mile in 1:36.61 Shred the Gnar, a $610,000 yearling purchase at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2023, is owned by Flying Dutchmen Breeding and Racing and trained by Brian Lynch. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
