The richest night of the year at Hollywood Dayton Raceway takes place on Saturday starting at 6:30 PM (EDT) when the track will offer four $250,000 stakes for the best older horses in the sport and an octet of $65,000 Ohio Sire Stakes races. On the wagering front there are a pair of $7,500 Guaranteed wagers, with a Pick 4 starting in race six and a Pick 5, which we handicap below, commencing in the ninth race. Race 9: $250K Dayton Distaff Derby Pace (3) TWIN B JOE FRESH has been ranked as the top horse in the country – male or female – most of the year and is riding an eight-race winning streak into Saturday. For my money she wasn’t at her best winning the Milton and perhaps that was due to having four weeks off prior to the contest. She’s clearly a single here despite facing a quality field. (7) Strong Poison is fast off the gate. She could be heading to the front and might last a bit longer with Lasix back in play now that she’s out of Kentucky. (4) Sylvia Hanover looked as good as she has all year finishing a length behind the top pick last time. Is she improving or was it just an off night for “Fresh”? Race 10: $250K Dayton Trotting Derby (7) SOUTHWIND TYRION is far and away the best horse in this race in my eyes. The eighth-place finish last time and lack of a start in five weeks may concern some and get us a slightly better price despite the fact that this barn excels with horses that miss time. (2) Logan Park has been sharp all year and you can argue his entire career. The switch to Dunn this week will mean a lower-than-justified price on a horse I’m still not convinced can win at this level. (6) Chapercraz has ability and could threaten on his best day. Race 11: $250K Dayton Pacing Derby This race can go any number of ways depending on trip and thus I’ll be spreading deep. (2) IT’S MY SHOW could offer the best value after finishing sixth last time at 5-1. The bottom line is he needs the right trip and that simply didn’t happen in the Hoosier Park Pacing Derby. (1) ABUCKABETT HANOVER has been sharp week after week and is clearly the one to beat since he got a huge post edge on (8) LITTLE ROCKET MAN, who has seen his stock rise dramatically in September. If he can somehow get any reasonable trip from post eight, watch out! (6) TAURASI comes down sharp from Mohawk and has proven capable of stepping up. (5) BUZZSAW RUSS has seconds in a number of stakes; just needs a trip. Race 12: $65K Ohio Sire Stakes (6) ROSE RUN ALLISON jumped it off for no reason on the first turn as the 2-5 chalk last time at Delaware. Her prior lines show no signs of breaks and a rebound seems likely. (5) DREAM SOMETHING owns a number of Ohio-sired wins already this year and she is capable from on or off the pace. Race 13: $65K Ohio Sire Stakes (7) COPPER PENNY was a bit lathered up in his first start with Lasix and rolled into a break trying to corner into the first turn at Delaware. The angle to the top will be much better from the outside on a five-eighths track and the price should be right. (9) SIPPINONSEAROC is the fastest 2-year-old in history and his recent losses have been to very talented foes; respect. (5) UNIQUE CATCH is a complete unknown who has dominated the fair scene and gets a major driver change. .50 Pick 5 Ticket: 3 / 7 / 1,2,5,6,8,9 / 5,6 / 5,7,9 = $18
