Daniel Stearns, longtime owner, breeder, veterinarian, and a former head of the Ohio Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protection Association, died on Thursday. He was 90 years old. Stearns served as the state veterinarian at Sunshine Park in the late 1940’s before coming to Thistledown in the early 1950’s. He has bred and owned horses in the state ever since. Stearns was a driving force behind the creation of the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners. He is survived by his son, Daniel Jr.
