Cyber Attack, the champion 2-year-old Quarter Horse colt of 2022, won his fifth consecutive race in a division of the Rainbow Derby trials at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday, earning a berth in the $804,288 final on July 15. Cyber Attack had a better afternoon on a rainy day at Ruidoso Downs than Hes Judgeandjury, winner of the $3 million All American Futurity and the champion 2-year-old gelding and overall 2-year-old of 2022. In his first start of the year, Hes Judgeandjury won a division of the Rainbow Derby trials in 21.74 seconds, but was outside of a top 10 time in the trials needed to secure a position in the final. Kj Bootscootin Jess earned the final berth by finishing fifth behind Cyber Attack with a time of 21.66 seconds. Hes Judgeandjury ran on a sloppy track into a slight headwind. Cyber Attack ran on a track rated muddy with no wind. Cyber Attack, owned by Connie Rosenthal and trained by Chris O’Dell, won the first race of the Ruidoso Triple Crown for 3-year-olds, the Ruidoso Derby at 400 yards on June 10. The Rainbow Derby is the second division, followed by the All American Derby at 440 yards on Sept. 3. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Cyber Attack has the second-fastest qualifying time for the Rainbow Derby behind Sicario V, who was timed in 21.33 with a win on a muddy track. Sicario V was second by a neck in the All American Futurity last September. He won the Ruidoso Invitational, the consolation for the Ruidoso Derby on June 10. The Rainbow Derby will be one of two major stakes on July 15, joined by the $478,049 Rainbow Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at 440 yards. The Rainbow Oaks will be the richest race in history for Quarter Horse 3-year-old fillies, surpassing the $461,500 Los Alamitos Oaks run in March. Fearless Moon, seventh in the Los Alamitos Oaks and fifth in the Heritage Place Oaks on June 3 at Remington Park, set the fastest qualifying time of 21.53 for the Rainbow Oaks by winning the last of six trials on Sunday. The first five finishers of that trial will comprise half of the 10 finalists, a field that will include Jes An Angel, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2022. Jes An Angel won a division of the Rainbow Oaks trials in 21.79, racing into an 8 mph headwind. Fearless Moon benefited from a 9 mph tailwind. The undefeated filly Dark Nme is the fastest qualifier for the $1 million Rainbow Futurity on July 16 after winning a division of the 400-yard trials by a commanding 3 1/4 lengths in 19.61 on Friday. Dark Nme won the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity in April and a division of the Ruidoso Futurity trials on May 26. Dark Nme did not have a quick enough time to qualify for the Ruidoso Futurity on June 11, but did earn a berth in the consolation, the Ruidoso Juvenile. She was withdrawn from that race in favor of the Rainbow Futurity trials. The five runners with the fastest time from 16 trials on Friday and Saturday advanced to the final. Dark Nme was the only runner in Friday’s trials to run faster than 20 seconds on a day when runners faced a stout headwind. In her trial, Dark Nme easily beat Wired 440, who was second in the Ruidoso Futurity. Wired 440 earned a berth in the Rainbow Futurity. Lets Leave, winner of the Ruidoso Futurity, was not entered in the Rainbow Futurity trials in favor of the All American Futurity trials in August. All five qualifiers from Saturday’s Rainbow Futurity trials ran quicker than 20 seconds, led by the gelding One Valiant Love who won his third consecutive start in 19.74 to set the day’s fastest qualifying time. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
