A.P. Indy and Curlin are among the most successful sires in the modern history of the American classics, and the two have proven a potent pedigree combination. Last year’s Kentucky Oaks heroine, Malathaat, was produced by crossing Curlin over an A.P. Indy mare. Nest, who will attempt to win the Oaks next week, is bred on the same cross. Malathaat is out of A.P. Indy’s daughter Dreaming of Julia, who won the Grade 1 Frizette as a juvenile and Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks the following year before finishing fourth in the Kentucky Oaks after a terrible break from the gate. Nest is out of Marion Ravenwood, an A.P. Indy mare who won the Capades Stakes at Aqueduct. The two fillies also have similarities in their development and racing records, beyond their pedigrees. “They both broke their maidens on debut at Belmont before running in the Tempted and the Demoiselle and then the Ashland,” trainer Todd Pletcher, who handles both, noted. “Both are Curlin fillies out of A.P. Indy mares, and not that they physically resemble each other that much, but both are extremely talented.” Curlin, who stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm, has sired 49 starters out of mares by A.P. Indy, who died in 2020 at his longtime home, Lane’s End Farm. Of those, 36 are winners, and 10 are stakes winners. In addition to Grade 1 winners Malathaat and Nest, the cross is responsible for Santa Anita Handicap winner Idol, Nest’s full brother; Woodward Stakes winner Global Campaign; and Grade 3 winner First Captain. :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales Curlin has also been extremely successful when crossed over A.P. Indy’s late son Bernardini, a prominent broodmare sire in his own right. The cross has produced 16 winners from 21 starters, with eight stakes winners including Grade 1 winners Clairiere and Paris Lights, along with multiple graded stakes winners Cezanne and Point of Honor. A.P. Indy’s influence lives on The late, great A.P. Indy was a perennial leading broodmare sire, and several of his sons have followed in his footsteps in that regard. That will be obvious the first weekend in May, as A.P. Indy and three of his sons appear likely to be represented as broodmare sires of Kentucky Derby or Kentucky Oaks entrants. A.P. Indy’s stakes-placed daughter Risk a Chance produced New York-bred Un Ojo, the popular one-eyed winner of the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. Un Ojo is by the late Laoban, a son of Uncle Mo. His Kentucky Derby foe Mo Donegal is bred on a similar pedigree pattern. Mo Donegal, winner of the Wood Memorial, is by Uncle Mo out of Callingmissbrown, a daughter of A.P. Indy’s son Pulpit. A.P. Indy’s consistent son Flatter is the broodmare sire of Santa Anita Derby winner Taiba. The Gun Runner colt is out of two-time Ohio-bred horse of the year Needmore Flattery. :: Want to start playing with a $510 bankroll and have access to free Formulator?
