Crystal Ball made a sparkling return to stakes company and shone in her debut for a new barn in taking the $250,000 Lady Jacqueline Stakes for fillies and mares Saturday at Thistledown. The filly also keyed a big day for the ownership team behind WinStar Farm and for jockey Luis Saez, who won three races including a pair of stakes on the day. Crystal Ball ($6) kindly stalked the pace set by locally based Racinrosemary, a length back through a half-mile in 47.88 seconds and six furlongs in 1:13.44 on the fast main track. She took the lead in upper stretch, with Miss Bigly, who was stalked-placed at Churchill Downs in her most recent outing, coming to her on the outside. Crystal Ball dug in to repel her challenger through the final sixteenth, edging clear by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire. She finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.80. It was 2 3/4 lengths back to Jilted Bride, who nosed out Getridofwhatailesu for third. Favored Horologist, a multiple graded stakes winner, was boxed in early but was never a factor once clear, finishing fifth. :: Get DRF Betting Strategies for exclusive analysis and wager recommendations from our expert handicappers. Crystal Ball, who races for WinStar Stablemates - an ownership experience group managed by the major Kentucky entity - finished second by a head in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks last July at Saratoga in her third career start, then was fifth in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes a month later. Following a long fall and winter break, she returned on April 2 with an allowance-optional claiming victory, then won a similar event on May 8 at Churchill Downs. Both those victories came for trainer Bob Baffert, who is currently not permitted to race in various jurisdictions following the post-Kentucky Derby positive test for Medina Spirit. WinStar leadership transferred Crystal Ball to Rodolphe Brisset, who saddled her to this win. Earlier, Historically stalked and pounced in the stretch for a three-length victory in the $75,000 Daniel Stearns Cleveland Gold Cup for Ohio-bred 3-year-olds. Longshot To Win was second by three-quarters of a length over fading pacesetter Uptown. It was another three-quarters to favored Buckeye Magic, the Ohio-bred champion juvenile of 2020, who rallied from eighth after being bumped at the start. This was the first career stakes victory for Historically, who finished fifth in the Best of Ohio Juvenile last fall. He opened this season with an allowance win at Thistledown, but then finished sixth in an off-the-turf edition of the Green Carpet Stakes last time out. Historically ($14.80) was ridden by Saez for trainer Tim Hamm, who co-bred and co-owns the gelding with WinStar, a prominent partner who has become more deeply involved in the Ohio program in recent years. Earlier on the card, Saez and Hamm teamed up for a victory with another statebred star, as reigning Ohio-bred horse of the year Esplanande prepared for what could be an ambitious summer campaign with a hard-fought half-length win over older stakes winner Circus Rings in an allowance race on the undercard. This was the third consecutive win for Esplanande ($2.20); however, while she scored her two previous victories, including the Best of Ohio Diana Stakes, by a combined 25 3/4 lengths, she had to work to hold off Circus Rings after setting all the pace. The 6-year-old Circus Rings is a veteran of the Ohio circuit, winning a pair of stakes last year and finishing third in the Best of Ohio Distaff.   The top two were 10 lengths clear of the rest of the field. Hamm, who also co-bred Esplanande with WinStar and co-owns her with that outfit and Michael Lewis, said last week that the allowance outing was designed as a prep for the filly's summer campaign, which could include a trip to Saratoga for open stakes, as well as stakes races in her home state. Esplanande, who is a three-time stakes winner against her fellow Ohio-breds, finished second to champion Vequist in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes last summer at Saratoga.
