Crafted and Lucky Jeremy will move to both stakes company and two turns off impressive maiden wins in Friday’s renewal of the $100,000 Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Park. The one-mile race is one of four stakes on the card. It’s also this year’s lone stepping-stone to the Grade 3, $400,000 Sunland Derby. The meet’s signature race is being run about five weeks earlier than usual, on Feb. 18. The Sunland Derby’s distance has been shortened from 1 1/8 miles to 1 1/16 miles. It will again share a card with the $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks, with this year’s lone local prep, the $65,000 Borderplex, also on the card Friday. :: Bet with the Best! He set the pace in the six-furlong race and fought for a half-length victory. Crafted covered the distance in 1:10.81 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 78. “He ran well first time out and I think Sunday is a good spot to move him from three-quarters to a mile,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “I think he’ll stretch out.” Crafted gets pedigree support for the added distance as a son of Vino Rosso and a mare by Bodemeister. Luis Fuentes has the mount from post 3 in the eight-horse Riley Allison. Crafted is an Ohio-bred who races for Winchell Thoroughbreds. Lucky Jeremy was a 1 1/2-length winner of a maiden over 6 1/2 furlongs in his last start Oct. 29 at Churchill. The horse, who races for Jeremy Ramsland, arrived about a week ago from Kentucky, trainer Bill Morey said Wednesday. “My owner lives out that way, likes to race at Sunland Park,” said Morey. Lucky Jeremy earned a Beyer of 81 for his maiden win, which is the best last-race number in the Riley Allison. “It was a good race,” Morey said. “We’ve always had high hopes for him. And we always wanted to try him a little farther and thought the flat mile would be a good opportunity for us. “I think he’ll handle the mile.” Christian Ramos has the mount on the son of Lookin At Lucky from post 6. Ramsland also is the owner of Surroundedbyangels, who was a debut winner on Jan. 5 at Sunland for trainer Bart Hone and Norwegian Callum, a debut winner Dec. 12 at Zia for trainer Dick Cappellucci. Ham Sandwich is making his Sunland debut after running fourth in a first-level allowance in October at Keeneland, while Kae Gae and Alotaluck were debut winners last out at Zia Park. Da Ringo enters off a maiden win at Remington Park. Candy Aisle heavily favored Candy Aisle has been made the 3-5 morning-line favorite for the $65,000 Borderplex, a 6 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies. She’s part of a field of five that includes stablemate Only One America and Remington Park allowance winner Illusive Star. Candy Aisle is a winner of 2 of 3 starts, with her last two outs resulting in stakes wins. She defeated males when winning her maiden in the $75,000 Manzano in October at the Downs at Albuquerque and came back and won the $100,000 Zia Park Princess in her most recent out Nov. 28. “She’s back in, ready to go,” said trainer Todd Fincher. “I think the farther she goes, the better she gets.” Felipe Valdez has the mount from post 2. “It looks to me like she ought to be laying third, tracking in a good position,” Fincher said. “It looks like there’s two speed horses and after that, she should be sitting right there.” Candy Aisle is a daughter of Gun Runner and a half-sister to Offering Plan, a multiple stakes winner of $891,573. She races for the partnership of Randy Andrews, Jim Cone, Brad King, and Lee Lewis. Only One America enters off a runner-up finish in a first-level allowance Dec. 12 at Zia. “I wasn’t going to run her, but she worked so good the other day and galloped out so good,” Fincher said of a half-mile move in 48.20 seconds Jan. 12. Tracy Hebert has the mount from the rail Friday. Illusive Star will break from post 5. She won her debut in Indiana and later captured an entry-level allowance at Remington. Fuentes has the mount from post 5 for Winchell Thoroughbreds and Asmussen. Illusive Star is a full sister to Nitrous, a past winner of the Riley Allison Derby. Both horses are by Tapit and from the multiple stakes winning mare Speedinthruthecity, an earner of more than $400,000. The Sunland Park Oaks will be run at a mile this year because of its earlier date. In the past, the race had been run over 1 1/16 miles toward the end of March. ◗ New Mexico stakes winner Topsy is the 123-pound highweight for the $65,000 Bold Ego Handicap for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs.
