HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The much-anticipated rematch between Burnham Square and Tappan Street, the first- and second-place finishers, respectively, in the Grade 3 Holy Bull here earlier this month, will not take place as many had hoped a week from Saturday in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park. While trainer Ian Wilkes confirmed Burnham Square is being pointed to the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth, his colleague Brad Cox said Tappan Street will bypass the race to await the $1 million Florida Derby four weeks later, a strategy he had hinted at with his lightly raced Kentucky Derby prospect immediately after he finished 1 3/4 lengths behind Burnham Square while making just his second start in the Holy Bull. Cox said Monday that although he has six 3-year-olds on the nomination list – the majority of whom are training in South Florida at Payson Park – he currently has no plans of entering anyone in the Fountain of Youth. He did confirm, however, that Patch Adams, who finished fourth as the 4-5 in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park in his 2025 debut, would remain in Florida to make his next start in the Tampa Bay Derby, while his recently acquired Flood Zone, a well-graded maiden winner here Jan. 4, is being pointed to the Gotham at Aqueduct. Despite the loss of Tappan Street as a potential starter, the Fountain of Youth is coming up a strong race, with Burnham Square likely to vie for favoritism with trainer Todd Pletcher’s undefeated and yet untested River Thames, a very impressive allowance winner at a mile on the Holy Bull undercard. The field also is expected to include stakes winners Keep It Easy and Sovereignty, both of whom will be launching their 3-year-old campaigns in the traditional Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby prep. :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! Wilkes brought Burnham Square down from his winter base at the Palm Meadows training center to school in the paddock during the races here Sunday and said the following morning that his steadily improving youngster seems to be flourishing since overcoming a somewhat eventful trip to register a mild upset in the Holy Bull. “We gave him a maintenance work over the weekend, four furlongs in 50 [seconds]. He galloped out real well, it was perfect. We don’t need to be working him in 59 at this point,” Wilkes said. “We’ve still got some little things to work on with him. He got a little nervous in the post parade before the Holy Bull, which is why I sent him down to school Sunday. But he’s put on weight and done real well since the last start, which is what I’m looking for. Carl [Nafzger] always said horses on this type of path, you’ve got to see them get better as they go along or they don’t belong.” Trainer Dale Romans said his plan all along was to await the Fountain of Youth with Keep It Easy following his 5 1/4-length victory in the Ed Brown Stakes at Churchill Downs going 6 1/2 furlongs on Nov. 30. “I think he’s a real quality horse, and a track like this, with a short stretch, is good place to try them out around two turns for the first time,” Romans said. “He hasn’t missed any training since his last start and he’s worked very well every week here. When you look down at your watch after he’s worked, it’s hard to believe he’s gone that fast as easily as he does it.” :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2025: Point standings, prep schedule, news, and more Lopez wins six on weekend Paco Lopez was the riding star here last weekend, winning six races, four on Saturday and another pair Sunday. Lopez’s four-bagger on Saturday featured a stunning victory aboard Inveigled ($31) for trainer Jane Cibelli over the 1-5 favorite Knightsbridge in the co-featured ninth race and an even bigger upset earlier on the card when guiding 24-1 Wildly Speedy to victory in the third race. Lopez has been riding in top form since being reinstated Jan. 23 after serving a 46-day suspension for striking a horse with his whip in a manner that violated HISA rules on Dec. 3 at Parx Racing. Lopez has registered 21 victories since his return while riding both locally and at Parx during that period. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
