Popular dual Eclipse Award champion Covfefe delivered her first foal, a filly by Constitution, on Tuesday in Kentucky. Co-owner Jaime Roth shared the news Tuesday evening, posting a video of the blaze-faced bay mare and her filly at Gainesway Farm, where they are boarded. Covfefe was campaigned throughout her career by the LNJ Foxwoods of Jaime Roth and her parents, Larry and Nanci. Covfefe became a viral sensation while winning her debut as a juvenile in 2018, due to her name. The filly was named for one of Donald Trump’s slips of the hand on Twitter in May 2017, when the former president posted “Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” without additional explanation. Covfefe made headlines on her own merits in 2019, winning three graded stakes in impressive fashion to earn dual Eclipse honors as champion female sprinter and champion 3-year-old filly. Her campaign was highlighted by a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita in what turned out to be her career finale. Earlier in the season, Covfefe rolled by 8 1/2 lengths in the Grade 3 Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico; her time for the six furlongs was 1:07.70, shattering the previous Pimlico track record of 1:09 established nearly 30 years prior. Covfefe also won the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga, outdueling Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress by a half-length. Covfefe, by leading sire Into Mischief, is from a prolific female family, raising hopes for her career as a broodmare. She is out of the unraced Unbridled mare Antics, who also produced Group 2 winner Albiano. Antics, a granddaughter of champion Althea, is a half-sister to UAE Horse of the Year Festival of Light, Grade 1 winner and sire Arch, and Grade 1 winner Acoma. Althea was one of eight stakes winners produced by the influential blue hen Courtly Dee.
