Country Grammer, who had mixed results in 10-figure stakes in the Middle East earlier this year, worked a half-mile in 47 seconds on Sunday for a possible start in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita on May 29. Trainer Bob Baffert said on Sunday that Country Grammer’s participation in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup at 1 1/4 miles depends on how the 6-year-old works in coming weeks. Country Grammer has won 5 of 16 starts and earned a whopping $14,897,300. His bankroll has been swelled by second-place finishes in the $20 million Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia in 2022 and in February, and a win the $12 million Dubai World Cup in 2022. Country Grammer was only seventh in this year’s Dubai World Cup on March 25 in his last start. Baffert will have a strong team for the Hollywood Gold Cup. The race is expected to include Defunded, who won his third stakes since October for the Hall of Fame trainer in the Grade 2 Californian Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Santa Anita on April 22. :: Get Santa Anita Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Faiza, unbeaten in five starts, is scheduled to run in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Pimlico on May 19, he said. Faiza won the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks at 1 1/16 miles by 6 1/2 lengths on April 8. Taiba, the winner of the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at seven furlongs for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, is on course for a start in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Mile at Belmont Park on June 10, which has a purse of $1 million. Taiba finished eighth in the Saudi Cup, his latest race. The Baffert-trained Adare Manor was the easy winner of the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Saturday for her first stakes win since February 2022. Adare Manor, who won two allowance races in February and March, will remain in California, Baffert said. The next race for the older female division on dirt is the Grade 2 Santa Margarita Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Santa Anita on June 10. Baffert said the long-term plan for Adare Manor is the BC Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. “I’ll keep her here,” he said. “The main goal is to have her ready for the Breeders’ Cup. She’s had three good races now.” Stilleto Boy gets brief vacation Stilleto Boy, who has emerged as a leading older horse this year, began a brief rest at trainer Ed Moger Jr.’s Northern California farm this weekend. Moger said on Sunday that Stilleto Boy will have a break for “two weeks, maybe three” before he resumes training. Moger’s farm is in Galt, Calif., south of Sacramento. Stilleto Boy won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 4 and was third by a head in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in Arkansas on April 22 in his last two starts. Owned by Moger’s brother, Steve, Stilleto Boy is an intended starter in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes, a $1 million race at 1 1/8 miles at Churchill Downs on July 1. “We want to run in the Stephen Foster,” Moger said. “It’s time to give him a little freshening. The weather is good out there right now.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
