Wednesday at York Racecourse in England, the great jockey Ryan Moore got City of Troy to relax on the lead and won the Group 1 International. Thursday at York, Moore could not get the filly Content to relax while racing several lengths off the pace, yet Content still closed strongly and won the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks. Content pulled hard for her head the first quarter mile of the 1 1/2-mile Yorkshire Oaks, which is open to older fillies and mares, and never entirely switched off during the race’s middle stages. Moore brought her up the inside rail through the endless York homestretch as the rest of the field kept to the center of the course, Content made the lead just past the furlong grounds, and she pushed to the line three-quarters of a length ahead of runner-up You Got To Me. The first two home, both 3-year-olds who got nine pounds from their older rivals, exited the July 20 Irish Oaks, where You Got To Me got the best of tough-luck Content. This time, with a cleaner trip, Content proved best. Third, one length behind You Got To Me, was the first older horse home, Emily Upjohn, who had traveled smoothly just behind and outside Content’s pacemaker, Port Fairy. Emily Upjohn cruised to the lead without being asked about three furlongs from the finish but could not quite match her younger rivals in the late stages. She performed far better than her well-bet John and Thady Gosden-trained stablemate, Queen of The Pride, who raced at the rear of the field, never picked up, and was eased. Content, who paid just $5.80 to her American backers, has improved steadily through her 3-year-old campaign, and its hard to believe she finished just fourth last fall in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. The Yorkshire Oaks is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, offering fees-paid entry into the Filly and Mare Turf and travel expenses to Del Mar, and Aidan O’Brien, who trains the filly for Coolmore connections, mentioned a trip back to America as a fall possibility for Content. The Prix Vermeille, the Arc de Triomphe, and the British Champion Fillies and Mares also will be considered. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Content is by Galileo out of Mecca’s Angel, by Dark Angel. Moore pointed out that if she’d raced professionally Thursday, she’d have tallied easily. Content won anyway. * City of Troy, winner of the Derby, the Eclipse, and on Wednesday the International, will be trained up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, his connections said on Thursday. His trainer, Aidan O’Brien, came close to winning the Classic with Giant’s Causeway in 2000, but O’Brien still seeks his first victory in the race. By Justify, City of Troy will travel from O’Brien’s base in Ireland to an all-weather track in England, Southwell or Wolverhampton, for his major pre-Classic work. * Celandine, a game front-running winner of the Group 3 Lowther Stakes, first race on York’s Thursday program, could make her next start in the six-furlong Cheveley Park Stakes, followed by a trip to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup, trainer Ed Walker said. * Formal, an eye-catching debut winner at Newbury for trainer Michael Stoute, and Tabiti, a Juddmonte homebred trained by Ralph Beckett who won her debut at Newmarket by more than three lengths, head the early betting on the Group 3 Prestige Stakes on Saturday at York. The seven-furlong Prestige, for 2-year-old fillies, is new this year to the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, its winner gaining automatic fees-paid entry into the Juvenile Fillies Turf. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
