HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – When the $75,000 Sunshine Sprint failed to fill, it left a unique void on the local calendar, a stakes-less Saturday card during the Gulfstream Park Championship meeting. But that’s not to say the 11-race program isn’t attractive since it features a trio of allowance events, two of which are carded, weather permitting, on the turf, along with a couple of open maiden special weight contests for 3-year-olds that always pique the interest of horseplayers this time of the year. Race 6: This six-furlong maiden special weight dash for 3-year-olds has lured a field of 11, including eight making their career debuts. Trainer Todd Pletcher’s pair of Maximus Speed and Turn Up the Trees figure to attract plenty of support, although Turn Up the Trees was much the best under jockey John Velazquez when the pair worked from the gate Jan. 6 at Palm Beach Downs. Bourbon Society and Top Gun Rocket figure to benefit from their previous experience. Bourbon Society, a half-brother to stakes winner Positano Sunset, finished a distant second to the odds-on Change of Command going seven furlongs in his debut here last month. Change of Command flattered the effort when returning to win a first-level allowance race earlier this week. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Top Gun Rocket is a half-brother to $1.5 million earner and five-time graded stakes winner Frank’s Rockette. He turns back in distance off a disappointing effort in a key race going 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs in his 2-year-old finale on Nov. 25 following a couple of better efforts going seven panels and a mile to open his career. Race 8: The first of the three allowance races on the day is carded at 1 1/16 miles on the turf for 3-year-olds with a bevy of contenders to choose from. The group is led, perhaps, by Cuban Thunder, who bounced back from a disappointing performance making his main-track debut in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a second-place finish over the Tapeta under allowance conditions here. He was run down late by the red-hot Salvattore Prince after rallying to a clear lead at midstretch. The field also includes the stakes-placed Typhoon Fury; Deadpan, who is coming off a sixth-place effort in Del Mar’s Grade 3 Cecil B DeMille Stakes in his 2-year-old finale; and the impressive maiden winners Katheeb, Beyond Stoked, and Cugino. Race 9: This promising group of 3-year-old maidens is again topped by a pair from the potent Pletcher stable, Be You and Antiquarian. Be You figures to be favored despite a disappointing effort behind the brilliant Nash when returning to the maiden ranks off a third-place finish in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes. He will have to overcome a tough post as he is drawn on the outside in a full field of a dozen. Antiquarian has been working forwardly for his debut, most recently showing excellent speed from the gate in company Jan. 6 at Palm Beach Downs. For those seeking an alternative to the Pletcher duo, they need look no further than Conquest Warrior, a $1 million yearling purchase who finished a distant third following a bit of a slow start behind the sensational maiden winner El Capi when debuting over a muddy track last month at Aqueduct. The field also includes three horses exiting the key Track Phantom maiden race on Nov. 25 at Churchill. The best of the group is D Day Sky, who overcame a slow start, wide trip, and his own greenness to finish third while earning a career-best 79 Beyer Figure in the process. Wistucky, who raced rankly dueling with the eventual winner, returns in this spot off a big work locally Dec. 31. Race 10: This 6 1/2-furlong allowance dash for fillies and mares lured just seven starters, with Euphima and Socially Selective the two most likely winners in a race that figures to feature a very honest pace. Euphima ran well in her local debut only to run afoul of the undefeated and yet untested Juliet’s Rose, finishing a distant second while easily best of the others. The stakes-placed Socially Selective has been idle since checking in a distant and disappointing runner-up to Aunt Becca as a prohibitive 2-5 favorite under entry-level allowance conditions on April 22 at Keeneland. :: Bet with the Best! Race 11: The finale is about as open as it gets with a full field of one dozen older fillies and mares going five panels on turf. One can make a case for most of the field, with trips likely to decide the outcome. Call Me Spicy might be the logical favorite on paper off a well-graded near miss under similar conditions in her last start, although she is a question mark if the race stays on grass. She also faces a tough task breaking from the extreme outside. The same holds true for in-form My Lady James, who makes her turf debut from post 10. The laundry list of other key contenders includes Alla Breve, David’s Rose, Kick a Rhyme, Ivory Moon, Work of Fiction, and Miss Sakamoto, among others. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
