SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Cogburn smashed a speed record at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf when he blistered a good field of sprinters in Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Jaipur Stakes for 3-year-olds and up over Saratoga’s Mellon Turf Course. The Jaipur is a “Win and You’re In” for the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 2. Cogburn’s final time of 59.80 seconds easily surpassed the previous North American mark of 1:00.21 set by Carotari in a first-level allowance at Saratoga in 2019 and earned him a 111 Beyer Speed Figure. “That’s as good as it gets,” winning trainer Steve Asmussen said. Favored Cogburn, as he did when winning his seasonal debut, the Grade 2 Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on May 4, broke like a rocket under Irad Ortiz Jr. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Cogburn sparred for the early lead inside of longshot Sosua Summer through an opening quarter of 21.33 over the firm course. Sosua Summer hung in there until the top of the stretch, but Cogburn then really got down to business. Seemingly unfazed by a red-hot half-mile split of 43.07, he spurted home to prevail by 3 1/2 lengths over late-running Arzak. Star of Mystery, who acted up very badly in the post parade and warmup, finished another neck back in third. Coppola, Mischief Magic, Dancing Buck, Filo Di Arianna, Thin White Duke, Alogon, Big Invasion, Sosua Summer and No Nay Mets completed the order of finish. Grooms All Bizness, Outlaw Kid, American Monarch and Souper Quest scratched after failing to escape the Also Eligible list. Cogburn returned $6.30 to win. “It’s unbelievably important to him,” Asmussen said about Cogburn’s quick first step. “Last year, he was having some troubles at the gates, but he hadn’t met his potential on the dirt. We tried the turf on him because we definitely felt there was more there. Obviously, he showed that last year, but it was a little late in the season [to try the Breeders’ Cup].” Cogburn won his first three starts on the turf, including Saratoga’s Grade 3 Troy, before finishing fifth, beaten only three-quarters of a length in the Grade 2 Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs. “The owners decided to give him an extended break with these races in mind,” Asmussen said. “And he’s just come back a complete monster. A bigger, stronger faster horse.” Bred in Kentucky by Bellary Bloodstock, Cogburn is a 5-year-old son of Not This Time out of In a Jif, a stakes-winner by Saintly Look. He sold for $52,000 as a weanling, was purchased for $310,000 as a yearling, and was bought by Clark Brewster in a private sale for $150,000 after the OBS April 2-year-old in training sale in 2021. Cogburn races for Brewster in partnership with William and Corinne Heiligbrodt. Cogburn has won 8 races from 14 starts for career earnings of $1,237,730. Asmussen said he would now work backward from the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. He mentioned the Grade 2, $2 million Turf Sprint racing six furlongs at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 7 as a potential final prep before the Breeders’ Cup.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
