ELMONT, N.Y. - Cody’s Wish has proven to be one of the elite milers in training. Now, he may get a chance to prove himself going a little farther. Following his emphatic victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, Cody’s Wish will be under strong consideration for the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 5, trainer Bill Mott said Sunday. The Whitney is run at 1 1/8 miles, a distance Cody’s Wish has yet to attempt. His lone loss in his last 10 starts came in the Challenger Stakes, going 1 1/16 miles at Tampa Bay Downs in March 2022, when he was beaten a neck by Scalding. “If you’re going to reach out and take a shot, you might as well do it where it counts,” Mott said. “I don’t want to waste a race with him anywhere, but the bottom line is with any of them you don’t know they’re going to get the distance or not get the distance until you actually try it.” :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! He’s won seven straight races and the 112 Beyer Speed Figure he earned for the Met Mile win equaled his career-best earned last summer in the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga. “I think what would allow him to get the distance now is that he’s more experienced and I think it’s very important to kind of know how to ride him,” Mott said. “That all took awhile. I think it not only took the horse awhile to learn how to run, I think it took the riders a little while to learn how to ride him.” Cody’s Wish left Belmont Sunday morning for Saratoga along with his Sprint champion stablemate Elite Power, who ran his winning streak to seven with a facile victory in the Grade 2 True North. Elite Power will now point to the two Grade 1 sprints at Saratoga - the Alfred G. Vanderbilt on July 29 and the Grade 1 Forego on Aug. 26. Elite Power, who won the True North by 1 3/4 lengths over Anarchist, earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure for the True North. That was his first start since winning the Riyadh Dirt Sprint in Saudi Arabia in February. The Mott-trained Casa Creed finished third, beaten one length by the mare Caravel, in his bid to win a third straight Grade 1 Jaipur. “I thought he had them measured; once he tipped out, I said ‘here he comes,’ but that filly [Caravel] had something left, but he ran well,” Mott said. “Gosh, he’s a warrior, what a cool horse.” Mott said Casa Creed will likely attempt to win the Grade 1 Fourstardave at Saratoga (Aug. 12) for a second straight year. From Friday, Mott said War Like Goddess came out of her sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 New York in good order and will likely point to the Grade 2, $250,000 Glens Falls at Saratoga on Aug. 3. Mott said his exciting 3-year-old filly prospect Scylla, a winner of both her starts, will soon head from Kentucky to Saratoga. She will be pointed to either the $135,000 Wilton Stakes on July 14 or the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 22. “If you’re prepping for the Alabama [Aug. 19], you probably want to try the mile and an eighth,” Mott said, referring to the Coaching Club. “If you’re trying to win a stakes, you probably run in the restricted stakes.” Up to the Mark has BC options Up to the Mark’s emphatic victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes gives trainer Todd Pletcher options as he plots out the remainder of the year for the emerging turf star. Up to the Mark, a 4-year-old son of Not This Time, won the Manhattan by 2 3/4 lengths over Soldier Rising. It was the fourth victory from five turf starts for Up to the Mark, this one going 1 1/4 miles. “He’s probably one of those horses you could point to the Breeders’ Cup Turf or the Breeders’ Cup Mile,” Pletcher said. Pletcher said the Grade 1, $1 million Arlington Million, which this year will be run at 1 1/4 miles at Colonial Downs on Aug. 12 “is kind of interesting.” Pletcher has a couple of talented turf milers in the barn as well. While the Grade 1-winning Annapolis was forced to miss Saturday’s Grade 3 Poker due to a foot issue, Pletcher won the race with Emmanuel, who ran down Filo Di Arianna by a neck. Emmanuel has won four stakes from a mile to 1 1/8 miles, which gives Pletcher ample options for his next start. Annapolis is likely pointing to the Grade 3 $175,000 Kelso at Saratoga on July 15. Phipps redux likely in Saratoga Clairiere and Search Results, separated by a half-length in Saturday’s Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at 1 1/16 miles, are likely to meet again in one or two spots this summer at Saratoga. Trainer Steve Asmussen said Clariere will soon ship to Saratoga and point to both the Grade 2 Shuvee on July 23 and the Grade 1 Personal Ensign on Aug. 25. Last year, Clairiere won the Shuvee before finishing fifth in the Personal Ensign after a bad break. It’s the same schedule as last summer, Asmussen said “only with more wins” he quipped. Search Results may be at her best from a mile to 1 1/16 miles, but she ran a terrific second to Malathaat when beaten a half-length in last year’s Grade 1 Personal Ensign at 1 1/8 miles. “A mile and an eighth might be a touch farther than her absolute best, but she’s so good that her running a mile and an eighth is probably better than most in the division anyway,” Chad Brown, the trainer of Search Results, said. Brown noted that both In Italian, winner of Friday’s Grade 1 Just a Game, and Marketsegmentation, Friday’s Grade 1 New York Stakes victor, could meet in the Grade 1 Diana, at 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga, on July 15. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
