Put up an age-restricted race with a $300,000 purse this late in the year and the entries will come flooding in, as they did for the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes on Friday at Churchill Downs. The Mrs. Revere, for fillies over 1 1/16 miles on grass, drew an overflow field of 15. A dozen can run, and at least one of the also-eligibles will get her chance since Neon Icon starts Thursday in the Falls City Stakes. Expect horses to walk over wearing winter blankets, as the forecast high Friday in Louisville is 35 degrees, the mercury expected to plummet below 20 on Friday night. Saturday marks the end of grass racing this year in Kentucky, with Sunday closing out the Churchill meeting. Friday, the Mrs. Revere matches three horses exiting impressive showings last month at Keeneland. Kehoe Beach went wire to wire thumping older second-level allowance foes on the Keeneland grass Oct. 26. The day before, Poolside With Slim won the Grade 2 Valley View in impressive fashion. And on Oct. 10, Minoushka, making her American debut, absolutely blitzed older rivals in a first-level allowance. The trio brings divergent running styles, with Kehoe Beach the likely leader under Frankie Dettori, Poolside With Slim hoping to drop over from a wide draw to secure a satisfactory stalking slot, and Minoushka settling in well off the pace. Dettori rode Kehoe Beach and Poolside With Slim at Keeneland and sides with the Wesley Ward-trained Kehoe Beach on Friday. Kehoe Beach’s star rose quickly late this summer and fall. Second in her turf and route debut over the summer at Ellis Park, Kehoe Beach rolled to an 8 1/2-length Kentucky Downs win Sept. 8, setting a course record for seven furlongs, albeit on lightning-fast turf. Dettori deployed identical tactics to the same effect going a two-turn mile at Keeneland, Kehoe Beach turning in the fastest final quarter-mile, 23.03 seconds, among a dozen horses, that after setting a strong pace. The finishing kick suggests an added half-furlong Friday won’t prevent Kehoe Beach from making it three in a row. “She’s a big, big filly. I took my time with her, and she’s kind of just now coming into herself,” Ward said. “I think if she runs the same as she has the last two she’s the winner regardless of the extra sixteenth of a mile. To see her, she’s not a sprinter.” Poolside With Slim picks up the services of John Velazquez, tasked with working out a trip from an outside draw after the filly found room to rally up the fence in the Valley View, where she proved much the best. That peak performance came about after Poolside With Slim found the cover she needs to properly relax and kick home, according to trainer Rusty Arnold. “It was easy to get cover at Keeneland from post 2. The outside will be harder, and it’s going to be up to Johnny to try and drop in and get covered up. We’re going to stop on her after this race, but she’s came out of the last race excellent,” Arnold said. Poolside With Slim and Minoushka have a form line through the same horse, Les Reys, who beat Minoushka by 1 3/4 lengths in France and Poolside With Slim by 1 1/2 lengths in New York. Minoushka in her first start for Brendan Walsh rocketed home behind a slow pace to easily win at Keeneland, albeit with a perfect trip. “She might not have beaten the most stellar field, but it was her first run in this country and you’d have to be impressed by it,” Walsh said. “She’s done well since. I think she has improved a lot, and I think she’s a filly who’s going to keep on improving.” Pin Up Betty exits the highest-class race, the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland, where she finished a respectable fourth. She’s had a long year. The other Keeneland horses could surpass her as the Kentucky grass season comes to a close. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
