DEL MAR, Calif. - Chasing Liberty was a come-from-behind runner in sprint stakes in Kentucky in recent starts. Starting at a mile for the first time on Friday, Chasing Liberty showed a different style, successfully racing closer to the pace in the $204,500 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance for 2-year-old milers at Del Mar. Ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Chasing Liberty raced wide on the turns, but showed enough through the stretch to beat 12-1 Test Score by a neck. Ortiz had Chasing Liberty close to the front after starting from post 9 in a field of 14. “He had a turn of foot early in the stretch,” Ortiz said. “Today, he was a little closer than in his sprint races. He was coming from way back. Going two turns, we didn’t want to be that far back. “He jumped so well. He put me in a good position. I let him be and he was happy.” Chasing Liberty ($15.60) was timed in 1:37.44 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 78, which equals his career best. :: ON SALE NOW: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages! Trainer Graham Motion said a start from post 11 affected Test Score. “He was a little unlucky, and a little unlucky the winner was in the race,” Motion said. “The post cost him a couple of lengths on the turn. He was wide.” Scipio (6-1) closed from ninth in the final furlong to finish fourth, beaten two lengths. Mi Bago was fifth, followed by Floodlites, Sabertooth, Artislas, Smash It, Snowdonia, Kale’s Angel, Supa Speed, Uncle Dude, and Tiz Happy. Chasing Liberty, a colt by Constitution, races for owner and breeder Twin Creeks Racing Stables and trainer Rob Atras. Chasing Liberty has won 3 of 4 starts and earned $770,901. Chasing Liberty won his debut in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Ellis Park on July 28 and was promoted from second to first in the $872,500 Juvenile Sprint at 6 1/2 furlongs at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 6. Chasing Liberty was fourth after a wide trip in the $237,257 Indian Summer Stakes going 5 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland on Oct. 6. The result on Friday is an indicator of 2025 objectives with Chasing Liberty. “I thought stretching out we’d be more tactically placed,” Atras said. “We thought he’d end up being a miler.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
