ARCADIA, Calif. – Chase the Chaos, winner of the El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 11 at Golden Gate Fields, will have his graded stakes debut in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 4 at Santa Anita. The $400,000 San Felipe Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles is a key prep for the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 8. Chase the Chaos won his first stakes in the El Camino Real Derby at 1 1/8 miles on a synthetic track, closing from fifth in a field of eight to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Trainer Ed Moger Jr. said the San Felipe Stakes will be a class test for Chase the Chaos, who has won 3 of 6 starts and earned $123,000. “I know it’s a huge jump up,” Moger said. “We’ll go from synthetic to dirt and we can find out where we’re at.” :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2023: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more By the Medgalia d’Oro stallion Astern, Chase the Chaos is owned by Adam Ference and Bill Dory. Armando Ayuso, who has ridden Chase the Chaos in his last four starts, will have the mount in the San Felipe, Moger said. On Monday at Golden Gate Fields, Chase the Chaos worked a half-mile in 50 seconds. “He started off super slow,” Moger said. “He finished pretty fast. He galloped out strong. “He just ran last Saturday. He didn’t need to do too much.” Moger could have a big day on March 4 at Santa Anita. He plans to start Stilleto Boy in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap.
