Charlie’s Wish became a stakes winner Saturday, when she rolled home by 4 3/4 lengths over Flakes in the $75,000 Azalea at Gulfstream Park. It was another 4 1/4 lengths back in third to favorite Trust Me. The Azalea was a seven furlong race for 3-year-old fillies. Charlie’s Wish ($6) settled in fifth off the pressured pace set by stablemate Trust Me, who took the field through an opening quarter in 23.48 seconds and a half-mile in 46.51. Charlie’s Wish advanced on the turn, came three wide into the stretch, and after moving past Trust Me and new leader Flakes went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:24.01. Leonel Reyes was aboard the winner for trainer David Fawkes. Charlie’s Wish had run second or third in three stakes ahead of getting her first stakes win in the Azalea. She is a daughter of First Dude who races for Royalight Racing. Charlie’s Wish has now won 3 of 9 starts for earnings of $188,540. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
