La Verdad, the champion female sprinter of 2015, was euthanized Sunday due to complications from colic, according to her owner, Sheila Rosenblum. La Verdad was 10. In a statement sent by text, Rosenblum said that La Verdad needed medical attention for a few days after giving birth to a colt by Into Mischief on May 4 at Vivien Molloy’s Edition Farm. La Verdad had previous foals – all fillies – by Curlin, Tapit, and Medaglia d’Oro. “After a few days of medical attention, she was humanely relieved of her distress this afternoon,” according to the release. “She passed from complications due to colic.” Rosenblum privately acquired La Verdad, a New York-bred daughter of Yes It’s True trained by Linda Rice, after her fourth start. La Verdad, who remained with Rice, won 16 of 25 starts and earned $1,563,200. She won 11 stakes and in 2015 she won 5 of 8 starts, including the Grade 2 Distaff, Grade 2 Gallant Bloom, Grade 3 Vagrancy, and two New York-bred stakes. She finished second to Wavell Avenue in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland. She was voted the Eclipse Award for female sprinter as well as champion New York-bred older female and female sprinter. “She was more than my champion mare, who was full of class, she was more than a horse to me, I loved her,” Rosenblum said in a text. “And sadly, on this Mother’s Day, it was one mother saying goodbye to another to an old friend and faithful partner. I am broken hearted.”
