ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Stakes-placed As Catch Can has found a cozy spot in Thursday’s Woodbine headliner and should be favored in the mile and 70-yard allowance for 2-year-old fillies. Trained by Jonathan Thomas for Augustin Stable, As Catch Can graduated third time out in a one-mile maiden special on turf Aug. 16 at Colonial Downs. Two months later, the daughter of Mo Town stumbled at the break before closing from 10th to finish fifth in a one-mile allowance on the turf at Keeneland. As Catch Can tried the Tapeta in the Grade 3 Mazarine here Nov. 3, finishing a close second after rallying three wide from the back of the pack. Seventh-place finisher Aristella returned to win the $251,500 Princess Elizabeth Stakes for Canadian-breds. Trainer Katerina Vassilieva, who won the Nov. 23 Shady Well Stakes with Pop Idol, is the local sub-trainer for Thomas. She sent out As Catch Can to breeze a solo half with a fast finish in 48.80 seconds here Nov. 24. “As Catch Can took to the Tapeta really well,” Vassilieva said. “She came out of the race in very good order and has been training forwardly since. She’s a smart, athletic filly who’s all business on the track. I expect her to run another big race.” Leading rider Sahin Civaci has the call on As Catch Can. Salt graduated at second asking July 20 when switching from the Tapeta to the main turf, over which she finished fifth in the Aug. 23 Catch a Glimpse Stakes. The well-bred daughter of Tapit was farther back than usual in 12th before making up some ground to finish eighth in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo on Oct. 6 at Aqueduct. With blinkers added, Salt came from ninth to finish fourth in the Mazarine, for which she got back on Lasix after going without it in the Miss Grillo. Lady Izzy is the lone entrant competing for the $75,000 claiming option. The daughter of Higher Power has improved with each subsequent outing and parlayed a stalking trip into a victory over Ontario-sired and $40,000 maidens going long in her first Tapeta race Oct. 26. Lady Izzy is dropping some weight with apprentice Austin Adams gaining the mount for trainer Sid Attard. Sweet Passions is stretching out after winning her last two starts against $25,000 maidens and Ontario-sired allowance opponents. Rafael Hernandez inherits the mount from the sidelined Justin Stein on the Paul Buttigieg-trained homebred. Rounding out the lineup are Neenah and Peace Posey.
