Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano, who tested positive for coronavirus on March 24 and who hasn’t ridden since March 15, returned to New York on Tuesday night. He is aiming to return to race-riding May 1 at Oaklawn Park. Castellano and several other jockeys who had ridden out of town, took tests for coronavirus before they were permitted to ride the March 28 Florida Derby Day card. Though he did not exhibit any symptoms, Castellano’s test came back positive. Castellano did two weeks of self-quarantine at his mother’s home in Florida. He said he took additional tests for coronavirus on April 3 and again Tuesday. Though the results were not yet back, Castellano said he was given “the green light” by Florida health officials to fly to New York. “They said we’ll call you when we get the results,” Castellano said. Health officials believe that a person who has had coronavirus will be immune from getting it a second time, at least this season. :: To stay up to date, follow us on: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Castellano, a four-time Eclipse Award winner, rode at Fair Grounds in Louisiana on March 14 and then rode two horses at Gulfstream Park on March 15. Castellano said he ran three miles the morning that he took the test on March 24 and ran three miles again on Tuesday before taking another test. “I feel good,” Castellano said. “I never had any symptoms. The scary part is people can have it and you don’t know it.” In a sign of the times, Castellano said he there were five people on his Tuesday flight from Florida. Castellano, 42, said he plans to spend time with his wife Abby and the couple’s three children. He is waiting to hear what protocols Oaklawn Park would place on him before being permitted to ride at that track. He is scheduled to ride British Idiom in the Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes on May 1 and a yet-to-be-determined 3-year-old in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby the following day. Castellano will miss the mount on Come Dancing in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom on April 18. Florent Geroux has picked the mount on her, according to trainer Carlos Martin.
