A large, competitive field of 3-year-old fillies face off Sunday in Laurel’s $100,000 Weather Vane Stakes at six furlongs. Carmelina has already won stakes at Colonial, Penn National, and Laurel and exits a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Prioress at Saratoga. “We were trying to get some graded black type,” trainer Butch Reid said. “She did have a tough trip against fast horses. Carmelina is doing extremely well. We’ve been running her a fair amount, but she’s running out of places to run against straight 3-year-olds, so we’re going to go ahead and give it another shot.” Morning-line favorite Youalmosthadme recently grabbed the Lady Erie over Tapeta at Presque Isle. Trained by Brad Cox, the Oxbow filly also has notched three stakes victories on dirt and placed in a pair of graded races earlier this year. She must overcome the far outside post under Sheldon Russell. Vincey Girl had a two-race win streak snapped in her stakes debut when fifth in the Grade 2 Charles Town Oaks on Aug. 23. “At the moment of the break, she lost the break and tried to go wide and lost so much ground,” trainer Jose D’Angelo said. “She closed very hard.” D’Angelo said Vincey Girl’s Charles Town race tempted him to stretch out in distance, but “her best races were the other ones in Florida [sprinting] against older horses where she beat them pretty easy.” :: Bet with the Best! Roanan Goddess goes from grass to dirt; she won the off-turf Searching on Aug. 4 at Laurel off a previous start on the grass. “She’s better on the dirt than she is on the turf,” trainer Hamilton Smith told track publicity. “I feel a little better about it in this spot than I did about the last one.” Irish Maxima and Miss Harriett might provide the early pace. Trained by John Servis, Irish Maxima returned from an extended layoff to wire second-level allowance foes Aug. 22 at Delaware. Miss Harriett was freshened after a pacesetting victory against state-sired foes in the Miss Disco on July 21. She is a three-time stakes winner at Laurel. Runaway Diva, Popover Gal, Brookmesa, Discreet Ops, Dewey Doit, and Yellow Feathers also are expected. Cap Classique is cross-entered in Saturday’s Grade 3 Dogwood at Churchill. Trainer Brittany Russell said last Saturday that Cap Classique “was probably heading to Churchill.” If she redirects to the Weather Vane, Cap Classique would loom a strong contender. Twixt Stakes The $100,000 Twixt for fillies and mares at a one-turn mile drew a field of seven, but trainer Todd Pletcher confirmed via text that morning-line favorite Miss Justify instead runs Saturday in Churchill’s Seneca Overnight. Saddle Up Jessie also seems unlikely after finishing third in Wednesday’s Obeah at Delaware. After defections, Miss New York and Mystic Pleasure might vie for favoritism. Miss New York captured the Boiling Springs at Monmouth last year at 3 and appears to be racing herself back into her best form for trainer Jorge Delgado. Her most recent effort was only her second start of 2024, and she tracked and pounced on her way to a comfortable victory in a high-level allowance Aug. 17 at Laurel. Miss New York scratched from the Obeah to await this spot. A daughter of Good Magic and Grade 2 winner Disposablepleasure, Mystic Pleasure was purchased for $110,000 in January and has won 2 of 5 starts for the new connections. Mystic Pleasure made her stakes debut last month at Ellis, finishing a close third in the Groupie Doll after setting the pace. “I think she kind of lost focus a little bit when she made the lead and she got surprised from the outside and got nailed on the wire,” trainer Rodolphe Brisset told Laurel track publicity. Florent Geroux “was on her and he told me that she put a nose in front and was going forward and may have hung a little bit.” Reclusive also scratched from the Obeah and enters the Twixt having won three of her last four starts. A Texas-bred mare by Flat Out, Reclusive rallied from off the pace to beat high-end allowance horses Sept. 3 at Parx. Continentalcongres looms the controlling speed after finishing second to Miss New York. Princess Indy, the lone 3-year-old in the race, prevailed in last year’s Sorority over this distance at Monmouth. A second-level allowance winner here two back, she recently rallied for fourth in the Pink Ribbon at Charles Town. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
