It was bombs away in the $250,000 Bourbonette Oaks on Saturday at Turfway Park, as Candy Raid, the longest shot on the board, blew the race wide open for a 4 1/2-length victory that returned $106.60. Candy Raid, a Candy Ride filly co-owned by her trainer, Keith Desormeaux, with Don't Tell My Wife Stables, could be poised for a raid on the Kentucky Oaks in less than five weeks at Churchill Downs. She earned 50 points under the qualifying system used to determine the field for the race with this victory. That will be enough to place her within the top 10 on the leaderboard toward the 14-horse field, with prep action still remaining on Saturday, and a number of major preps still to come next weekend This was the 10th career start for Candy Raid, whose prior wins came in a maiden claiming race sprinting on dirt last summer at Ellis, and a sprint allowance in December at Delta. The filly was coming off starts in a pair of Oaks points races at Fair Grounds, as she finished fourth in the Silverbulletday on Jan. 22, but eighth in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra on Feb. 19. Rafael Bejarano got aboard her for the first time as the filly returned to Kentucky. :: Serious horseplayers use serious products. " 'Give a chance to the horse to run and she will come running in the end.' " Come running, she did. Candy Raid was last after the opening quarter-mile, and was still ninth of 12 through a brisk opening six furlongs of 1:11.85, but was about to unleash a sweeping move. "By the three-eighths, I felt like I had a lot of horse," Bejarano said. "And I said, 'OK, I'm going to make sure I'm getting out of trouble.'" Candy Raid's deft move carried her past the bulk of the field and to the throatlatch of Schlofmitz entering the stretch, and she quickly assumed command as that one faded. She widened her advantage to the wire and finished the 1 1/16 miles on the Tapeta in 1:42.96. Catiche and Tap Dancing Lady - neither of whom is a current Oaks nominee - finished in a dead heat for second, just a neck ahead of North County. Fillies may still be supplemented to the Oaks for $25,000 at entry time. North County was also exiting the Fair Grounds series of Oaks preps, as she won the Untapable at Fair Grounds in December, earning 10 points toward the gate, but then was seventh in the Rachel Alexandra there. She earned another 10 points for her fourth-place finish here. Rounding out the order of finish were Mrs. Barbara, Schlofmitz, favored Rags to Riches Stakes winner Sandstone, Vergara, Heavenly Hellos, Let's Be Clear, Red Hot Mama, and Champagne Poetry.
