ARCADIA, Calif. – Help is on its way to the California sprint and turf divisions in the final two races Saturday at Santa Anita. Grade 1 winner Dr. Schivel returns in an allowance sprint, race 8. Thirty minutes later in race 9, Offlee Naughty tries to cement his one-race reputation as the circuit’s top distance turf horse; he meets Brazil Group 1 winner Planetario and others in the Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes. Dr. Schivel, sidelined one year due to bone bruising, returns at an opportune time. While he was off, the sprint division has been a revolving door. Recent graded winners include Brickyard Ride, Spirit of Makena, and Hopkins. An in-form Dr. Schivel would give any of those a battle. However, the six-furlong allowance race Saturday is the first start for Dr. Schivel since March 2022. Trainer Mark Glatt acknowledged Dr. Schivel might not be cranked. “He’s going into it a little bit light on training, he could be a little bit rusty,” Glatt said. “We’re just anxious and excited about getting him going and seeing what he can do through the course of this summer.” :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  According to Glatt, 5-year-old Dr. Schivel “seems to be the same old horse” compared to 2021 when he emerged as the top sprinter in California at age 3. He won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar, Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, and missed by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar. He has not raced since a third-place finish in Dubai in spring 2022. “He gets bone bruising,” Glatt explained. “We went through it after his 2-year-old campaign. He gets to a certain [number] of races before you have to give him some time.” When he shows up, Dr. Schivel is as good as any sprinter in California. Winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity in 2020 before emerging as a top older sprinter in 2021, Dr. Schivel has won five races and $1,076,500 from 10 starts. Dr. Schivel’s summer objective is the Bing Crosby on July 29 at Del Mar, where he won three races and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup. If he runs well Saturday, Glatt expects Dr. Schivel to start again before Del Mar. “There’s a possibility of a race between Saturday and the Bing Crosby,” Glatt said without being specific. Options could include the Grade 2 True North or Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on June 10 at Belmont Park. Juan Hernandez rides Dr. Schivel, whose rivals in the open allowance include 2022 BC Sprint runner-up C Z Rocket, a 9-year-old graded winner who has won 12 races and more than $1.9 million. None Above the Law, Escape Route, and Clem Labine also entered. While the layoff and rail draw are challenges for Dr. Schivel, there is less uncertainty regarding the most likely winner on the card. Offlee Naughty looks formidable in the San Luis Rey, a 1 1/2-mile turf race that is the ninth and final race Saturday. Eight entered the San Luis Rey, including graded winners Dicey Mo Chara and comebacker Midcourt; graded-placed Opry; allowance-caliber Explain This Audit, Rimprotector, and Agatino; and Brazilian-bred Planetario. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Offlee Naughty ran faster each successive quarter in the 1 1/4-mile Whittingham – 26.39 seconds, 24.94, 24.54, 23.65, and 22.93. “He found another gear coming to the three-sixteenths pole and really started picking them off,” McCarthy said. “It was a very good race off a little bit of an unintended layoff. He came back and had a regular routine and looks like he’s doing very well. Plans called for Offlee Naughty to campaign this year at Turfway Park, where his 2:01.88 1 1/4-mile allowance set a track record in December. But when planned races at Turfway were canceled, McCarthy sent the 5-year-old to California for the distance turf series that culminates with the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes on closing day, June 18. Offlee Naughty’s new rider is Umberto Rispoli, his new challenger is Planetario. A multiple Group 1 winner in Brazil, Planetario was sidelined following a fifth-place U.S. debut last June. Trainer Richard Mandella said 5-for-9 Planetario was off with “aches and pains.” While the San Luis Rey is merely a starting point for Planetario, Mandella has identified a goal for Geaux Rocket Ride, who got sick and scratched April 8 from the Santa Anita Derby. Geaux Rocket Ride recovered, worked five furlongs this week, and Mandella said will aim to the Grade 3 Affirmed Stakes on June 4. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
