CYPRESS, Calif. – California Chrome’s workouts are getting serious. With four weeks remaining before his summer debut in the $200,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, California Chrome worked six furlongs in 1:12.40 at Los Alamitos on Saturday. The exercise equaled his longest workout since he returned to training in early May following a win in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates on March 26. After Saturday’s workout, trainer Art Sherman described the schedule he has planned for California Chrome in the coming weeks. California Chrome will be fitted with blinkers in a workout July 2. He has not been fitted with blinkers in recent weeks. After an additional workout at Los Alamitos on July 9, California Chrome will be trained at Del Mar in the buildup to the San Diego Handicap on July 23. California Chrome is tentatively scheduled to have a workout at Del Mar on July 16. On Saturday, California Chrome worked alone under exercise rider Dihigi Gladney. California Chrome has a dedicated training time at approximately 5:30 a.m. each Saturday, before the other stables begin exercising horses. California Chrome started slowly, going the opening quarter-mile in 25 seconds, according to Los Alamitos clockers. He was timed in 48.60 seconds for a half-mile and ran the last quarter-mile in 23.80 seconds. California Chrome galloped out seven furlongs in 1:26.60. Sherman timed California Chrome in a slightly quicker 1:12.20 for six furlongs. Sherman said the next workouts will be designed for more speed, which is why he is adding blinkers. “I’d like him to gallop out in 24 and change,” he said. “I’ll slap some blinkers on him.” Gladney has been California Chrome’s regular exercise and work rider since last fall. A former jockey at Los Alamitos, Gladney accompanied California Chrome to the United Arab Emirates earlier this year. Gladney said he has sensed a change in the popular 5-year-old in recent weeks, particularly on workout days. “He knows we’re getting ready,” Gladney said. “He knows it’s a different day than the other days.” California Chrome’s early-morning workouts have drawn a small group of loyal followers each Saturday. Co-owner Perry Martin was in attendance Saturday. Martin owns California Chrome with Taylor Made Farms. California Chrome has won 12 of 21 starts and earned $12,532,650. He is the richest North American-based Thoroughbred of all time and is expected to add to that total in the San Diego Handicap, a prep for the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 20. The long-term goal is the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 5. Gladney is hopeful that California Chrome can maintain his enthusiasm for training and racing in the coming months. There has been no shortage of energy in recent mornings. “He’s always looking for a target,” Gladney said. “When he came back from Dubai, it was like he was glad to be back. “He’s more aggressive. He’s getting better and better.”
