ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Calgary Cat, Canada’s reigning champion sprinter, will try to rebound from a rare subpar showing on Saturday at Woodbine in the $150,000 Achievement Stakes. Calgary Cat, who was claimed for $25,000 in November 2013, won 5 of 7 outings and $315,000 in 2014. This spring, he rallied strongly to land his season opener in the Jacques Cartier Stakes before coming up empty May 17 in the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes. Eurico Da Silva wrapped up on Calgary Cat late in the seven-furlong Vigil while the gelding was tiring. “The horse was flat, so he just erred on the side of caution,” trainer Kevin Attard said. “He just wanted to look after him. Fortunately, he came out of the race in good order.” The six-furlong Achievement was previously for Ontario-bred 3-year-olds, but it has been opened up to include older Ontario-breds this year. It is one of two stakes on Saturday’s 10-race card, along with the $100,000 Charlie Barley. :: DRF Live: Get real-time updates and insights from DRF reporters and handicappers on Saturday KEY CONTENDERS Calgary Cat (Last 3 Beyers: 73-99-97) ◗ Attard said the flashy chestnut has trained encouragingly since the Vigil. “He’s had three pretty strong works,” Attard said. “He’s had some time in between races, so we’re looking for him to bounce back to his old self. Going into it, I’m pretty confident that he’s peaking and ready to lay down a good race.” Phil’s Dream (Last 3 Beyers: 94-86-73) ◗ Canada’s champion sprinter in 2013 had another productive campaign in 2014 and would go over the $1 million mark in earnings with a victory in the Achievement. ◗ Even with him finishing second in all three of his starts this year, most recently in the Grade 2 Connaught Cup, trainer Paul Buttigieg said the gelding has lost a step this year. “I guess he’s tailed off a little bit,” Buttigieg said. “He’s 7 years old, but he still tries hard. We took a chip out of his ankle last fall. I’m happy with him.” :: Bet the Achievement with DRF Bets and get FREE access to this article and all of DRF Plus, including Woodbine selections, video, and real-time analysis. Star Contender (Last 3 Beyers: 79-89-83) ◗ The 2012 Cup and Saucer Stakes winner performed well on grass last year before capping his season with a second in a second-level optional claimer on Polytrack. He has worked quickly for his return from a layoff. Flashaway in Charlie Barley Following a troubled third against older allowance opposition, Flashaway should be prominent in this overnight event for 3-year-olds at a mile on grass.
