LEXINGTON, Ky. - Jockey Luan Machado capped a roller coaster week with an upset victory aboard Brunacini in the Grade 3, $300,000 Perryville Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters, the co-feature on Saturday at Keeneland. His mount, who drew in off the also-eligible list, hung on by a half-length over favored Book’em Danno at the wire, returning $58.16. “It means a lot for me and for the whole connections,” Machado said. “I am super happy for everybody.” Machado won two races on Saturday, giving him three victories at this Keeneland fall meet - but it’s the one that got away that has become infamous. On Wednesday, with his mount Ultimate Value leading by daylight, Machado misjudged the finish line at Keeneland, which uses two finish lines for two-turn dirt races depending on the distance, and stood in the irons at the first finish line, at the sixteenth pole. Ultimate Value was caught by Gotta Have Dreams at the second finish line that was in use for the race. On Friday evening, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission stewards announced that Machado would be fined $2,500 and suspended three racing days for the error in judgment. He will serve those days on Oct. 27, 30, and 31, the first three days of the Churchill Downs fall meet.  But on Saturday, Machado was in action with Brunacini, in just his third career start, after winning his debut at Ellis Park and finishing fifth in a Churchill Downs allowance. Despite not riding him in either of those outings, Machado was familiar with Brunacini, having galloped him in the mornings and worked him last week for trainer Matthew Sims.  :: Play Keeneland with the most trusted information in horse racing! Very hard to gallop and super tough.” As he broke from the far outside post, Machado was able to keep Brunacini in the clear throughout, which helped make a difference in the stretch. Turning for home, the big chestnut was launching his bid in earnest on the outside of Epic Ride - making his first start since finishing 14th in the Kentucky Derby - as that one prepared to take over the lead from Patriot Spirit and a fading Goodlookinjustice, on the rail. Meanwhile Grade 1 winner Book’em Danno, seeking his sixth career stakes victory, was seventh and inside of horses after a half-mile, but confidently handled. The gelding split horses to go after the leaders in upper stretch, with the well-regarded Knightsbridge, unbeaten in two starts but making his first start since March, taking advantage and bulling his way through to launch a bid in tandem.  Brunacini wrested the lead from Epic Ride inside the final furlong, but had to fend off a final bid from Book’em Danno. With the favorite cutting in to the margin late, Brunacini held on by a half-length at the wire.  Brunacini stopped the clock in 1:22.80, which bested the seven-furlong record of 1:23.21 established by Gunite in 2022.  Knightsbridge and Epic Ride finished in a dead heat for third, three-quarters of a length behind the top two.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
